22 May
Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
brought in by a native with the cat train.
There is lots of Ptarmigan along about and
found one large, (?) fox dropping. No microtars,
No small birds a waterfowl seen. Pull!
About 3/4 went out to the big lake NW of camp
and then cut over to the Meade River and
walked back in to camp. The area over here
looks the same as the area I visited about
noon. There were about 15 Ptarmigan near
two air strip on the far side of the creek where
I crossed going out and 2 Eskimos were clearly
about 50 more where I returned. (I suppose they
are all Willows Ptarmigans) There is nothing
else out at all and very little of the land
is exposed, mostly only along the steepest slopes
where there is bare sand. The tops of the ridges
are iced over and only the top of a few stems
are sticking out. In other words, it remains dull.
Still no signs of microtars. Went to bed about 10.
23 May
Got up about 8:30. Weather like yesterday
but the wind has died down a little. No signs
of melt. About 10/1/3 Snow Geese came over
very slowly but they didn't stay around.
I went out a little in the AM but there
wasn't much out. Ptarmigan in camp and
Ray Shot & which I prepared for dinner,
most of the afternoon. During the Afternoon
