DrBenedictis 1400 Journal 6 22 May Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska brought in by a native with the cat train. There is lots of Ptarmigan along about and found one large, (?) fox dropping. No microtars, No small birds a waterfowl seen. Pull! About 3/4 went out to the big lake NW of camp and then cut over to the Meade River and walked back in to camp. The area over here looks the same as the area I visited about noon. There were about 15 Ptarmigan near two air strip on the far side of the creek where I crossed going out and 2 Eskimos were clearly about 50 more where I returned. (I suppose they are all Willows Ptarmigans) There is nothing else out at all and very little of the land is exposed, mostly only along the steepest slopes where there is bare sand. The tops of the ridges are iced over and only the top of a few stems are sticking out. In other words, it remains dull. Still no signs of microtars. Went to bed about 10. 23 May Got up about 8:30. Weather like yesterday but the wind has died down a little. No signs of melt. About 10/1/3 Snow Geese came over very slowly but they didn't stay around. I went out a little in the AM but there wasn't much out. Ptarmigan in camp and Ray Shot & which I prepared for dinner, most of the afternoon. During the Afternoon
