28 May Wlede River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
and possibly one Hiotian runway. In the evening there was a Fox out in the drained lake
W of camp and a few Longspurs flying about.
29 May In the AM, clear and sunny, there was surprisingly little abrict. A stray dog has been
galloping back and forth through camp and howling here and there during the night. One
of the generators went out. We traded 5 gal.
of gasoline for a goose, but no one wants to
cook it. Melt proceeded unexpectedly during
the day and uncovered of the ridge and
some of the polygon ridges are exposed.
The morning was spent putting up a census
plot 5 x 4 acres (0.8 x 1 km.) which will be
extended a little when it opens up. Saw
only a few Geese, Longspurs and Gulls
while setting it up. Some Squirrel activity
near camp. This occupied the period 10 to noon.
About 1, after lunch I spotted a pectoral Sand-
piper sitting quietly in a polygon outside
the kitchen window and then afterwards of about
20 flying over. A mother lone bird came by and
the 132' went with it to the CO2 shield, where
they rested quietly. A few Longspurs abode.
Rested 2 to 3:30, then went to the village
until about 4:30, when a plane came in
from ARB. Saw 5 Turnstones in the village
