Journal 7
23 May Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
saw a Arctic Ground Squirrel about 2:30,
4 Glaucoes Quills from about 700 to 500.
Ray said he saw 4 small birds near
the native village and I heard a ? Longspur
singing from time about 5. The Ptarmigan
were good but tough. The crops were
full of green Eriococcus (Ledum) leaves and a
few willow buds. The 7's are farther along
in most than the 9's, as is evident in the
field and are quite a bit larger with
considerable size variation. It will be interesting
to get a few more sets, as I am sure I will.
I decided to get to bed early and
up early tomorrow. Finally had some
bedding sent in from [illegible] plus a radio.
24 May About 8:30 I decided to walk to the far
Oxbows of the Meade south of camp. It was very
windy, a wet wind from the E blowing weak
snow, but with occ. patches of sunshine coming
through. Saw a Snow Bunting in camp + 1
Ptarmigan when I was eating. The trip was
uneventful. Heard a Bunting when I left the
camp and saw nothing for the next 3 hrs. The
bank of the Meade is mostly Sand dune and
the oxbow area is only partly stabilized. The
dunes are gone to less Willows and Elymus
which is sparse; the sand is clearly windblown.
