P. D. Breed 1966 Journal 18 July Meadle River to Baines, Alaska The weather was really bad, so we didn't stay out very long. Cooking dinner made the plane come, as usual. 19-24 July In Baines for R+R. The weather was overcast, windy and rainy most of the time so I didn't get out much. The few sunny days we had I wet out to look around, and found not much change from last year, except that there aren't any pectorals a phalaropes [illegible]. A few birds with chicks. Found a brood of small Semipalmated chicks in a saturated Alopecurus area about 100 yds from camp in the Baines area. No nests. Pretty good flower show. I am impressed by the much greater abundance of Pocacea hue (compared to Meade River) and by the absence of diots on the ground mat (except Dwarf willows). Obviously it's been a cold wet July. On July 20 went with Center to the troops and he flushed an Oldsquaw from a nest with 7 young by the weasel road in the North area; I collected one of them. No lemmings seen but still lots of sign from last year; old runways, droppings, etc. Only a few jaegers are about, mostly Parasitic. Occasionally flocks of eiders, as usual. Saw almost as many chicks in 2-3 days as all last summer, so the birds that were here did pretty well. Attempts to Take photos were pretty well frustrated. On the 24th went to Cape Thompson, hope for only 4 days. The weather was good on the flight out and we went low. Saw only 3-5 jaegers and no owls
