P. De Benedick 1465 14 July Barrow, Alaska Went out with Hamilton to check the loops but little out; there were almost no shorebirds along the route in or out and few to be as we checked the traps. Hamilton found a phalarope nest on the way out and another and a semipal nest on the way in. It was clear but a cold wind from the east greatly lowered the temperature. Tjäggers still flushed out in Central Marsh and an Arctic loon was down in one of the pools there. Saw a small group of unidentifiable eider on the way in + 5 Steller's + the rest in Central Marsh. In the afternoon went out to Gasoline to check on the loonites that had been there without success. Walked a Transect on Ft. 17, getting nothing. The Baird's still on the nest. Checked a few ests and found 2 Phalarope and a ptarmigan nest; there was a small group of Dicrurin near the ponds west of the line, and I found a 6 egg Steller's Eider nest. We walked across the ridge and back along the other side but saw little. Tjäggers widely spaced in this area. Went back to check nest (but only eggs. Northeast beyond Olesquaw along the lead. Stayed in this evening. 15 July Went out in the morning to check nests behind the lab. The weather was windy, from the east, and rainy in the late morning and all afternoon. It was very quiet and few birds were seen. A number of the ests were empty and no trace of the birds could be found. No evidence of any having hatched. All
