18 June
Barrow, Alaska.
In the afternoon went out with Mullen to the
Beach Ridge to catch live hummingbirds and
walked in to Arkh from there. There was little
on the ridge but closer in this was quite a
bit of shorebird display, and more Baird's
Sandpiper than usual; longspurs with change
from previously and saw a jaeger copulation.
Still lots of birds on central marsh. Spent
the evening at Arkh.

In the morning I went out to the Beach Ridge
with Dave Mullen to catch hummingbirds. There was
no song, but only a few longspurs were present;
didn't notice any groups of jaegers, and the only
shorebird seen was a Semipalmated. The wind has not
proceeded much but the wind has shifted to the
W/NW and it was not as cold feeling today as
usual, although it snowed slightly on two
occasions. Stayed in the rest of the A.M. and
in the afternoon went over towards the North
area with Hamilton from about 2 to 5:30.
The area hasn't changed much from before
except in bird activity. The only song heard
was longspurs and snowbunting except
a burst of shorebird noise; this was more varied
than usual. There were two hummingbirds along
the N side of Family Lagoon; and more farther
inland; the ice on S. Salt Lagoon is beginning to
