P. DeBenedictis 1965 23 July Barrow, Alaska Went out to Central Marsh to walk transects on IV-VIII and to check on the jaegers there. I was also able to remove a number of Shorebird nest stakes. The jaegers on the road out have hatched and I saw 1 chick at the 1st post along the road to the ridge. The Baird's Nest there was hatching and I photographed the chicks. There were 4 Golden Plovers & a pectoral along the road here; in Central Marsh there were 8 Black bellies and 3 h-T. Jaegers plus 5 on the ridge near JSC+GS. Saw 5 more plovers (Bolder) on the ridge N of Pitelka's plot. Walked the transects, getting 100THMR! On the way in there were about 21 Golden Plovers & only 1 Black- belly + 4 Baird's Sandpipers in the marsh and the h-Tails lined disappeared. The wind of yesterday continued though not quite as strong - a fog made it just as miserable. No sign of a Eiderflight. Went along the edge of Marsh to W. Headless Lake (finding 2 more Golden Plovers) and in scrub a pair of semipales near the AACS shacks. Quiet day. 24 July Stayed in the morning and in the afternoon went out to help Bob with lines 3+4.
