P.D.Benedick 1966 Journal -23 3 June Meade River Coal Mine 175°25'W, 70°29'N, Harker local. They were primarily in high center polygons and on the polygon ridges, and where the grass was fairly open. Saw a few peckers, but most of them were sleeping and there were 284 Semipalmated Sandpipers near the creek. Saw one feeding on a bare gravel bar in the Meade R. Two gulls flew over and heard Black bellies. Two Parasitic Jaegers, probably the local pair, in the area, plus at least 1 long-tail. No celd landbirds. Only one Wagtail seems to be here. Longspurs singing a little until 10. Many act like they are paired but loose aggregations of 10+ still are here. No long fights as at camp and by the village. I don't think this area is really exposed enough yet to pull in full quota of birds, or else population happens to be fairly low locally. Hard to tell what particular species are doing because so few are about. At least 287 Pternistars and one sexual chasing. The willows are essentially clean of kids, just from Pternistars grazing. 4 June. Got up about 10. The fog cleared up a little earlier. Went to the village to see what was about and to get a few observations. There was a Rusty Blackbird just N of camp, which stayed there most of the A.M. There is lots of Wagtail Activity along the creek and at least two pairs are present. Considerable song all A.M. and I flushed a bird with nesting material
