P. DeBenedetti 1465 Journal-31 9 June Meade River Coal Mine. 157°25'W, 78°29'N. Alaska Got up early but spent part of the A.M. writing note, the attempt to clean up last night failed and the wind is still fairly strong. Finally got out about 10 and went back of the village to try for breeding observations. Walked along the lake by its CO2 Danni- guise and along its creek - dunlin and Golden Plover only. Semipals near the village plus a few dowitchers. Walked about 2/3's the length of the Village ridge. In its exposed areas only Semipal Sandpipers, were its only species. One bent dunlin and 4 pectorals in the wet stuff where there is tall Elymus. When it's windy the pecterals get down in the tall grass and I can't see them until I stop on them. When expected most birds are paired and don't seem to be nesting yet. Lots of dunlin display and a little song near the village. On the flats Arctic Terns were hovering over the pools and dowitchers were numerous. 1♂ each Golden & Black-belly plover, and a few Semipals and dunlin. Pectorals towards the village, but not N of there. In the pool on the Meade River & oldsquaw, 2 Red-throated, and glaucous gull and Arctic Terns. Jaegers widespread overhead. Savannah sparrow on its flats in quarry area and longspurs widespread and fairly noisy. A few birds flying about. Red phalaropes much commoner now and 3-4% definitely seen. 24 Hithers also.
