Journal - 15
30 May Meacle River Coal Mine, 15°23'5"N, 70°24'1"W, Alan
Wagtail and flushed a Silverback Sparrow on
the way in. Wrote note and then went to
bed, foot sore and pooped. I'm told there
are now a few ciders and some sawnus
about. I found one spot where a guela
jungu had been working along the edge of
a melt patch (looking for lemmings?) and I
also saw a guelb eating something on the
far side of the river about 7 P.M. I am very
impressed how most of the birds here seem to be
passing through rather than settling down, to
be followed by transients as at Banows; the
exceptions to this appear to be only Longspurs
and possibly Golden Plovers though the latter
are noisily enough when in flight, note, that
I could well be wrong about them.
31 May Slept here and about 10:30 went to the village
creek to try and get a wagtail. Clear, sunny and
light wind again today - great. There are at least
3 Wagtails there, singing away now, and
also 1-2 White-crowned Sparrows and a Blackpoll,
which I collected. Lots of Longspurs. There are at least
4 and probably 6 Tinamous here, and I also saw
6 Golden Plover, 1 Black-bellied Plover, 2+ Dunlin,
4+ Semipalmated Sandpipers, and dead a Dowitcher.
An immature Merri Creek was around, and
I saw 2+ Parasitic Jaegers, a Sabine Gull, 7 Pintail.
