Journal
14 June Meade River Coal Mine, to Barrow, Alaska
Staying around camp to get the plane into
Barrow, but it does seem to be taking its time.
Little activity in the A.M. due to the heat. Most birds
sleeping. A few phalaropes and pectorals about. 2 Redpolls
feeding near the airstrip allowed close approach for
a change - I fail to see much difference between
these and Michigan winter birds. Went toward
the census plot and the wagtails were as non-
cooperative as ever. A pair of white-crown there.
Ptarmigan still in the area. (1P). Dryas coming
up. Collected a few U.S. flow larkspurs and hypopodium
in its [illegible] and about two De plane came in. Took some
plots on the way out - but not much evident now.
No sign of animals. The Barrow Region - from
M of the Inauna, still quite snow covered but
very clear S of there. At Barrow, went into the
Beard area, which has been worked up some for
last season. Lots of Banded Sandpiper and Semipalmated
activity and a few dunlin. Seems to be about as
many as last year. Bred dunlin were conspicuous
and longspurs definitely up. 3 Sandlars in a field
choice. In the evening went to the Beall ridge but
we didn't see much - a few Semipalmated, Red Phalaropes,
and a couple of Parasitic Jaegers. Rannunculus
here, which is absent at Meade River. Very foggy
in the evening. Went to bed about 1. after getting
some lavender, done.
