27 May Mecole River Coal Mine 157°25'W, 20°24'N, Alaska
the Pternigau, and the squirrel don't seem to be feeling
much at all. Saw two groups of geese, 6 and 8,
all White-parts. This place could get interesting
yet. Pternigau and 2 longspurs in camp
when I got back about 1 PM. In the evening walked
SE along the Heade. There were 3 Turnstones here
plus a group of 6 Pternigau. While I was going
a group of 9 longspurs came by and 5 Glaucous
flew over. Later I found a group of 16 sitting
out on a flat area. There is now considerable
Squirrel sign about, which was not then two
days ago, but I didn't see any squirrel.
At 7:30 to 8:30 only. Cold and windy
now but some sun coming.
28 May In the AM I walked SE along the Heade to the creek
that comes in at the Oxbow, then in a short
ways and walked back to camp. The weather
was calm and sunny when I left and soon
changed to overcast with snow flurries, although
it never became cold. There was a Pternigau in
camp and 60+39 farther down along the river,
feeding in Turf and Dryas patches as usual, as
well as in willow areas. I saw a pipit near
the coal mine and a Redpoll flew over when
I was about a mile from camp. There
was a largeish group (10+) of longspurs
by the creek and with three one Savannah
