Baumre, Alaska
the large lake west of Throatik and were also seen in
many of the smaller pools: A flock of Brent + 3 Grebes + a
pair of gulls were seen; pintail were also seen, plus 2 female Eiders either
King or Common. Longspurs were not numerous but
well distributed and Tundra Buntings were almost nil.
No odd balls and little evidence of flocking was
obtained. Checked 2 semi-pool nests (1419) on the way out
but no change. Took a number of photos Today
(and yesterday). Perhaps the most impressive
happening has been the formation of an ice ridge, in place
about 20 feet high, on shore of Chincheki Sea,
during the night; McClean said it not not there
at 3 AM and was certainly present by 8:30.
12 July
got up late and went out behind the lab to check all 6
Nests: 4 were empty, and single
birds only were seen at each. Little of note about.
In the afternoon Bob, Steve and I went to Central
Marsh to set out lines II-VIII, this lasting most
of the afternoon. The marsh has dried fairly considerably
and there were few birds along the margin - nothing
in Holmes's Marsh. Staked another jayeye nest and
saw another sitting. We saw a line of 125 Common
Spectacled Eiders on the way in and 2 groups of 40-
150 St. Kings on the way back. In the evening went
to UOTI area to check nests: all sense except
Alpines 2, which contained 4 freshly hatched young.
McClean found a new dunlin nest with 3 young, 1 still
