5 June Made River Coal Mine . 157°02'N, 70°24'W, Alaska
It was lovely !! A ground fog came up about midnight
and as the sun was at its lowest there was a flying
solar halo and I saw loop the opposite way. The
generator quit so you could hear what was going on!
The Plovers started off first, then a little quail
noise and cluckers. Semipals, and pecktail
started off more or less simultaneously and kept up
for about 1/2 hrs., longspurs active but not singing,
a lot after 2, and the white-crowned going off and
on. A snow bunting singing from the mine shaft
was very audible. A group of 10+ Oldsquaw came
over going east and several pairs and a group of 4-5
were seen later. Sabine gulls started flying over in
small groups from 4 PM on and 1 Yellow-billed
horn and a pair of Scamp went over. A nelpoll
went by several times and once landed quite close
to me. I walked at the censu plot until about 2
and then walked along the south ridge until about 3.
The ridge was good walking and very interesting botanically
but poor for birds. Black-billed plates sang overhead and
a few Semipals were about. There was with evidence
of any cranes except [illegible] with wet stuff off the
ridge. Lots of longspurs. I went back to the census plot
about 4 and checked it until 5. Phalaropes of both
genders going over and one small group of pecktail
on the ground. Not much golden plover activity.
A little doing on the census plot, which was finally
