11 July
Mecuile River Coal Mine, 157°02'5"W, 70°02'7"N, Alaska
but the big bird concentrations were South of where we
went (along the 3 marker). The nesting place
were near its 3.6 marker and a second
then moved into the area where I found 2
pectoral chicks. We found 2 chicks here, both
fairly large but without flight feathers. Came
in about 11. A very nice day, and the Western
chicks were a fine discovery. Cute little buggers.

The word of the day is wind and rain.
13 July
In the morning went to check the Plover's nest and
the cormorant plot. There was very little activity along
lake Agassiz for a change, but a few semipalm remained
ed in the area and were on the Cacuricularia
flat, where they did a little feeding. The tundra
in conspicuous for a change but still in the area.
The Plovers were just hatching, 3 young, one still wet,
in the nest and 1 egg, which did not seem to have
started - the I gave strong distraction display
and they staged off. I went then to the 6.6
marker and worked this cormorant plot slowly.
A Spectral which acted like it had young
flushed from a very dry Carse pool being invaded
by Euphylus, but this created over a large
area of Euphylus seal. A dunlin in the area
also gave alarm calls. 5/7/ Two cold eggs
in the Semipalm nest and the Corgops fledged.
A dunlin probably with young were near Pt. 6,2.
