25 June Miacle River Coal Mine, 157025'W, 76°29'N, Alaska
disappeared before I could get it. Two blue-bellied
plumers feeding on the sphagnum dikes in the pond,
and 3+ doo-doo's flew out. Heard 1+2 dunlin
but never saw them on the ground. The three red
phalaropes collected were alone, one feeding actively
(462) and one was cleaning a 2nd 3 out of a pool,
then feeding a little, when collected; The 4 was
resting quietly in a shallow pool where shot. Saw
only lone birds, but one 4 in with a flock of 8 4
Northern phalaropes, from which I shot two birds.
There was another flock of 5 birds in its corner or well.
Saw no golden plovers. On the way back I walked
the willows a bit, finding a pintail nest with 5 eggs
and a Savannah sparrow nest with 5 eggs. I got
back about 12:30 and spent most of the rest of the
day putting up birds and preparing stomachs. Three
Cairn came by camp about noon, and Ray got all
excited and went out hunting; and he also caught
a nice red-throated loon in a fish nest, which he
didn't want.
26 June Spent the morning trying to get started and finally up
about 1 P.M., and off. Spent the afternoon on the census
plot with one great success and lots of moderate luck.
I took a trip from the ones I had been running and
set it in front of the coot's nest, and caught it
within 3 hrs. Collected the nest and eggs. The band
has a Hongkong address on it. Glad that's done
