Bearow, Alaska
Stayed in the am. writing notes. In the afternoon went
with Hamilton to set lines IX, X, XI. It was clear and
the wind was slight, shifting to the west in the late
afternoon. It was quiet and wet from the recent rain.
There were few birds to be seen in the meadow area,
nothing much being noted as we set out the lines.
There were a couple of oldsquaw on N Meadow lake.
The gashie Ridge area contained a few dunlin,
apparently with young, and the 1st downy young
golden Plover of the year were found by McClean who
joined us. The Baird's Nest was empty, but the
cider nest appears to have been broken up. After
all had finished with the lines I photographed
the plover chicks and checked the jaegers seen by
the ridge, then went out behind the Medelows lakes,
where I found a 3 egg phalarope nest. Found a 4 egg
nest on the way in. There was a large flock of cider
over the Central Marsh area, and we saw two
smaller flocks at the lab. Watched the shadbirds
for a while in the evening; We had taken Steve to Duck
camp and saw several groups of king Eiders there.
(shoten 4 95 to King, rest Common -1 Brent) and
cider were going by in the evening; saw a few gulls
and oldsquaw and loons and 1+3 2-7 Jaegers or Terns
for out and a possible alcid. The wind was fairly
strong in the evening and the action over the water
was not like that of yesterday.
