June 10 Barrow, Alaska
went out in the A.M. about 10, about 2PM and about 7
PM to check around the ARH; the snow is visibly melting
and much more soil is being exposed; lemming runway systems
are appearing in the snow. I saw both the Fox Sparrow & the
White-c. that turned up yesterday and the 1st few shorebirds
around the lab area; didn't look at the pack ice area.
There seem to be more dispersion among the shorebirds,
and the shorebirds were not found until the evening
check; read during the morning and in the afternoon
helped Dr. P. Hekla process lemmings. About 7:30
Dr. P. Hekla, S. McCleant & I went out towards the
Central Wash - Wishhog Slough area, seeing #s of jaegers
and quite a few Snowy Owls along with the first few
shorebirds. There were 2 large concentrations of jaegers & we
had 7 Snowy Owls in sight at one time. The weather was
variable during the day, winds from the east, wet with
sc. snow flurries of short duration and some fog.
The tundra as compared to yesterday is much more
open, no a little drift-ice remaining and beginning
runways appearing. Saw no lemmings on its surface
but saw several kills being made. The tundra was
almost quitl except for a short period of sunshine.
Got back about 10:15 and spent the rest of the evening
with notes.
June 11. about 9:30 went out in the panel area behind the
ARH; the snow continues to melt off and more
gross is exposed: this are clearly more longspurs
