25 May Heade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°24'N, A flotkey
of geese flew over after noon and about 6 P.M.
spotted 5±2 Ptarmigan on the far side of the
Meade River. These stayed around for most of
the evening, as the natives are out after caribou
about 25 mi. N of here. Went to bed early.
Sure hope some birds will show up so I'll

but few birds here. Most the Ptarmigan gone (2R, 3bow).
Glaucous Gulls etc. flying by and one small group on
lake behind this camp; all are adults as usual here.
Helped Phil Johnson move some gas tanks, most of

period. A Squirrel came out about noon and
a small flake of geese appeared in the evening.
Another dull day, but lots of ground reversed.
27 May There's hope at mail. About 8:30 I started off towards
the dunes N of the village to see what was about. Then
were 6-9 Ptarmigan in camp area and more
in the flats along the river beyond it, feeding in dry low
exposed areas as usual. 2 Snow Buntings in camp
when I got up. Near the village saw 3 rare Bunting,
a Puddy Turnstone and 56 hayland longspurs.
Faiths along towards the dunes here were 3 or 4
Grand Squirrels, a Glaucous Gull, 2 Buntings
and at least 9 longspurs. The # Buntings and
Longspurs are feeding in the same areas as
