De Benedictis 1966 Journal - 9 25 May Heade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°24'N, A flotkey of geese flew over after noon and about 6 P.M. spotted 5±2 Ptarmigan on the far side of the Meade River. These stayed around for most of the evening, as the natives are out after caribou about 25 mi. N of here. Went to bed early. Sure hope some birds will show up so I'll have something to do. 26 May. Stayed in camp. almost no wind and much audible but few birds here. Most the Ptarmigan gone (2R, 3bow). Glaucous Gulls etc. flying by and one small group on lake behind this camp; all are adults as usual here. Helped Phil Johnson move some gas tanks, most of the mid day - saw one Snow Bunting during this period. A Squirrel came out about noon and a small flake of geese appeared in the evening. Another dull day, but lots of ground reversed. 27 May There's hope at mail. About 8:30 I started off towards the dunes N of the village to see what was about. Then were 6-9 Ptarmigan in camp area and more in the flats along the river beyond it, feeding in dry low exposed areas as usual. 2 Snow Buntings in camp when I got up. Near the village saw 3 rare Bunting, a Puddy Turnstone and 56 hayland longspurs. Faiths along towards the dunes here were 3 or 4 Grand Squirrels, a Glaucous Gull, 2 Buntings and at least 9 longspurs.
