P. De Benedich's 1966 Journal - 17 31 May Meadle River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska. except from the Dlovers and the Ptarmigan were fairly quiet. At this A.M. Heard Redpolls but didn't see any. The sheldrilds seem to be feeding anywhere they came, and primarily in the north grassy high polygons with good lichen cover. The ground is still solidly frozen so all feeding must be on the surface. It got quite warm today, well over 40 and would have been much more if not for the snow. The Meadle R. is getting quite damp in places. Went down to the village creek for a while - 8 to 10 P.M. - to try for wogtails but again no luck. A dull bird (?) was in camp and just barely out of range all the Times and a 7 flew about my head in two minutes without landing. There were two white-crowned Sparrows together and a Robin here, but no change in the sheldrilds, except in a decline. A Red Phalarope flew over calling and a few peep and golden plover were flying about in small group. Cold and for the most part quiet. Again tonight most of the birds turned off about 10:30 P.M. Not a lot moving about. 1 June. An attempt to get up early was a gross failure - I didn't come close. It's windy today from the East and large patches of snow obscure the blue sky, but the ground is not being covered up. Very quiet, the longspurs begging the ground.
