Journal - 5
21 May Barrow to Meade River Coal Mine, Alaska.
This A.M much like yesterday. No much around
the camp except a few Snow Buntings. A good
chance I will be able to get out to Meade
River this P.M. About Noon I found a flock of
c. 100 Thayer's Gulls on the ice opposite the
ARK Theater and before I had a good chance
to look at them we were off to the Meade
River. Everything being set up. On the way
in the tundra 98±20 snow covered, just
the ridge tops exposed. Didn't see any
animals at all. When we arrived at
Meade River I was told Ptarmigan are
all over the place but didn't see any.
Saw 2 groups of 12± geese flying inland.
No small birds around. Spent most of the
P.M. setting up camp. No sleeping bags
were sent in but the corners are warm and
the best works.
22 May Saw 6 Ptarmigan in camp, after cleaning
up I walked towards & beyond the coal
mine about 1 3/4 miles along the river, then
cast inland to some shrubs and headed
back. Heavy wind and misty snow.
Very unpleasant. Saw only One Ptarmigan.
Lots of grass tops exposed, but little Tundra.
I got a dead ciberaleer for UH42 which
Frank Kisor found yesterday. It may have been
