27 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°24'N, Alaska
in many acres, and do typical Euphluus
Tussock types. Here a & Crolley Plover gave
a distraction display when I approach, and I
saw 1* pair of dunlin. 1-2 Semipale, and 3-4
Red Phalaropes, of which I shot 3. One Plover,
a 4 out of its territory. I worked quite quickly,
and tried the willows in Redpool but only saw
birds going over. Saw 25 Savannah Sparrows
as a whole crew, and several longspurs, in
the willows, but no shore birds. Got back about
1:30 and spent the afternoon preparing birds.
To tired to type anything, it is evening.
28 June Got up fairly early and went to the census plot. The
sky moderately overcast and warm, with occasional
showers. The plot was quiet except for the dunlin,
which decided to set up again. Still can't get
a line on a reel. The Western still there, sitting
on a Semipale which belongs to one of the tenants on the
plot. 8 Plover incubating. Found a longspur nest
with 3 eggs, probably a 2nd nest, and I think I
am beginning to get things under control. Two
pelegrins off the plot hovering. Several small groups
of phalaropes going over. Many birds off nests when
I checked them today. The jaegers seem to have moved
out to the river along and there was a lot of
fress and bother going on over there. The Savannah
Sparrow I found has hatched at least one egg, and the
