P. De Benedich 1965 26 July Barrow, Alaska otherthan 23 King Eiders on a ice berg little around. Waked out a pretty good way to tell Arctic from Red-throated Loons from below. Arctics have Black axillars with contrasting white wing (wingy white Red thued dull white) with white or gray axillaries. Arctic Red-throated. Almost no Snowy Owls near the FAA Tower now. 27 July In the morning went Hamilton to the trap lines to check ests. Few shorebirds by lines 3 and 4, joggars not out of their with one chick only. Nest quillus 19 with 2 cold eggs, Gradults nearby. Saw 4 Golden Plovers by lines 4 and 5 long-tail Jaeger and a 2nd year Herring Gull with the Glaucese gulls in the Barrow Dump. Watched the ocean for a while, then went in. After lunch went to USC+GS with McClean and walked in seeing few birds on the way in. 6 long-tail Jaegers and 4 Golden Plover in Central Marsh, the usual powairies. The powairies nest behind AACS with one egg and passillus nest 25 (note up). Saw no semipalms in the area at all. Went behind the theater from about 4 to 5:30 watching birds go by on the Chuckchi sea. During the 1st hour Kittiwakes were numerous and alcids scarce, later many alcids and a few Kittiwakes. In addition to the species listed I saw one bird that was probably a Tuffed
