11 August (Meadele River Coal Mine, 157°25' W, 70°27' N). Bell
settled over the entire area and
I saw two long-teeth, also [illegible] noted in
several days, near the village. The only
really surprising feature was the
scarcity of Ptarmigan, found a couple
of new plants even yet - the floral list
for vascular plants now up to about 195 species.
12 August Still windy but not so cold as before. In the
morning I went along the Meadele S to Sneed
Creek and poked around there a while,
Saw 2 long spears on the way plus 3 pied
Sandpipers flying along the heads. Nothing
at this creek, and all very quiet. In the
afternoon went to get a general description
of the causes plot - this occupying almost
each of the times. There was only 1 pied
and 2 longspears on it, the former near
a marshy area. The plot appears to be
3 main vegetation types, Crinumulaja
(vaginae) (cousinilis),
Cetaria association; Eriophorum - Carex
low polygons, which grade into the Caws
Pond low polygon by a series of
associations - Carex - Eriophorum; Carex -
Eriophorum - Salix reticulata (mostly along
the river bluff where the moss cover is
thin; Carex - Eriophorum Salix arbutifolia
bonds (almost equivalent to the preceding);
