27 June. Mesquite River Cool Mire, (57°02'5"W, 78°29'N), Alaska.
many nearly empty Carey pools in the flats and
a series of large, deep sand-bottom lakes along
the bluff, and Eriophorum - moss/lichen hummock
areas in between, with several large moss-lichen
areas. There were a few Semipols, and at least 1 patrol
in the shallow Carey pools, and much active
feeding was going on. Shot 3 birds before I got to
the lakes. Saw only two or 3 Red Phalaropes by
the lakes and was unable to get any - there were
as 3-4? and 1-2? Northern Phalaropes, and a few
Semipols along the lakes, all of which feed mostly
along the lake margin over the sandy lake bottoms being worked only by
one Acrothelys plant 2-3 feet apart. Found a
4-egg Semipol nest here. A couple of Steltiogas,
1-2 pintails and a 2-Scoop here, and 3-8 Sabine
Gulls and 3-4 Arctic Terns over the lake. The gulls
were getting insects on the lake ice and saw one
seagull. No nesting here, yet. Few jays.
The darter was in an aquatic fern marsh
and was the only one noted. In a large lichen area
(dominated by Cornicularia, Cetaria sp., Thamnalia)
There were a pair of Blackbills that obviously
had avit, which I could not find, and a
couple of Turnstones, whose nest I found with some
effort. The exposed area was all Core moss
with high ridges between. The ridges 3-6 feet wide
