Saw 1 Bl chin. sparrow, several Scrub Jay (they always respond to 'pishing', TV, Ash-Mn Flycatcher, Plain Titmouse (in trees), Eutamia sf?, Sperophilus beecheyi. The scrub varies from sparse to dense or low to high. There is a small stream up there. Perhaps it's too hot or wrong time of day. Departed 1915 still no new sounds. Sierra Nat Forest 20 June Departed Berkeley 230p.m., to Merced, Maniposa, Oakhurst - South Fork, DOR P.s Towhe (RM2681) Fish on E shore of Bass Lake. Camped at Rocky Creek (T. 8S, R. 34E, sec. 4). Drove pretty much straight through. From South Fork, took rd (Minarets) to SE, past Castle PK, Lion Rd., Clearwater Station. Firmed about Castle PK or (to Fish Cr, at least) there is a mixed forest - dense scrub. Two locals independently estimated the elev at 3500-4000. 21 June 0500 - Robin singing. Sev. others in dawn chorus that I was unsure of, (Vireo)T or Fly, 0545- Rocky Creek Cuyquil - M. dove, Scrub Jay. Day cool then. R.M. Zink 1978 Journal Sierra Nat. Forest. 3mi N. 1 mi Tuckess Rock Modena & California 21 June (mid) Immediately greeted by several singing Fox Sparrows. Spent essentially rest of day in immediate vicinity. Coll. 10 Fox Sparrows Saw: 1 Mac Gill. Warbler, 2 Williamson (prob. red-flanked) Sapsucker, wood quail calling, 2R. C. Kinglet, ??C. Chick., 2+ Mt. Chick adee, Robin, The area of exposed rock is puzzling. There is evidence of a great burn - did the soil erode before the brush could establish? The situation is ~ to S-N: N Tuckess 3m: E Tuckess Rock - again the mixture of bush, confuse exposed rock varying. Ran's Clover Meadow Station - lots of snow still in woods. An afternoon Today stayed at a small (100 yds x 80yds) meadow, on rd to Graveyard Mtiv. - Saw Robin, 1Bm. Creeper (see grass), 1 Ad? ? Irenchius coronata aurantior. Cameled to the sound of coyote bark about a mile away. 22 June 0608. Très frais! Returned to Fox Sp. Local (note Correct local is T.65, R.25E, see 31). 0750 - 2+ Fox Sp., 2? Steller Jay, Robin, P.B. Hustled down road (minutes) to rd. to South Fork, There lots open areas up dense clumps of manzanita, Ceanothus - seem to be fewer trees than the the local. This whole area is a mixture of brush or conifers. There is some evidence of a past fire. The area around South Fork Rd (T6S, R25E, sec. 6) is worthy of further work. I see sprout. collected 10 Fox Sparrows there 0600-0800 + 1100-1230. Also saw: Goshawk (susp ect), Rufous-sided Towhee, 2 Cassin Finch (rising), Stellar Jay, 2+ Quail (to or smd. in dense manzanita - didn't flush although flew very close + shot a Fox Sparrow almost directly over them), Empedonax, Olive-sly [illegible] calling, [illegible], White headed Woodpecker, Red- shafted Flicker, 2+ Robin. Took several photos of the area. Then drove to Mammoth pool where there is a store (+ gas .83/gal.). The store is open from Trout opens (midjune to October). Camped at [illegible] worked on birds ton

R.M. Zink 1978 Journal Sierra Nat. Forest, Mariposa Co., California 24 June The road goes cont. down to North Fork (N228S). From there went to Aubery + from there to Shore Lake. The area around North Fork (*from mile high center down South) is chaparral (San Escrub Jay & Caly, Quail, 3/4 Mmmy deer.) From Aubery, the road climbs again + encounters forest. At Shore Lake called [illegible] Coors + informed him didle collecting in area. He suggested W of Huntington L. + Edison Util. Co. have a big campground on W side of Shore Lake, open Memorial Day - October - 1/2 to Hot showers. At picnic grids heard 2 Fox Sparrows singing in marguina capped near Shore Dam. Sierra Nat. Forest, Fresno Co., California, NW of Shore Lake 25 June Drove on Stump Creek Rd, took dirt rd. to Aspen brdw. (leave camp ca. heard Pile Woodpek. NE1/4 Rd at T. 8S, R. 14E, sec. 13) - this rd is under construction. Saw Star Jay, I Townsend Solitaire, B. 46 Grosbeak. Met Forest Service Tech. Mike Reddy - he led me towards a brush field, at T. 7S, R. 2SE, subsec 30 + T. 7S, R. 24E- NE1/4 sec. 25 - however rd. was not traversable, came pickup. Went to another brushfield at T. 7S, R. 24E, secs. 13, 14, 23, 24 + T. 7S, R. 24E, secs. 18+19. The forest service has sprayed muchly this area to kill off the brush + there lots of dead marguina + some new. It's basically different from near Rockies Fork (see 24June ex.) as there is a predominance of young ponderosa spruce pines. Saw 2 R.S.Town, crop Bl. headed Grosbeak, Nashville Warbler, at Fox Sparrows (called). Drove to - Mt. Tom (9019') - there a snowbrush field at T. 7S, R. 268) NW sec. 6. Along Stump Creek Rd, there are numerous

Along stump 4. Rd saw Robin, wirl Buteo (but. jamaicens), stopped at T:75, R:26E, sec:5 on rd to Mt. Tom lookout + prepared the 2 specimens from earlier today. Very interesting woods - still lots of runoff (many streams), muddy gravel + snow drifts remaining in woods. About 4 headed on foot down rd towards Mt. Tom looking for the brush fields, which I found - used low leanother - morganita, in patches intergrated w/ forest. Partly the brush field is essentially flat but to the S it slopes steeply (to Stump Creek Rd), lots of bird activity saw: 2+ hummer (??), heard thrush calling (but.), 2+ Mt. chickadee, 4+ West. Ice on water levels high - many ridges only have been open for 1-2 wks (!). The plant community here is quite heterogeneous, with patches of dense cedarthus (the prufery kind), manzanita + trees of various sorts (conifer + a few deciduous) + size. R.M. Zink 1979 Journal MVE to White Mtns., California 2 July Larry Conroy + I departed Berkeley for the White Mtns., to collect Passerella iliaca canescens. We drove E on Hwy 120. Was one of the most spectacular scenery days I've had. Drove through Yosemite were amazed by the geological sights (numerous cirques), Not the glacial lakes (= tarns), moraines. Saw ~30 California Gulls on the lake tower 7,000ft. At Tuolumne Meadows, saw 100+ Brown Blackbird, but little else. Stopped at Toga Pass + talked to some people working w/ Paul Sherman. Continued on E slope, past Mono Lake, to Bishop, where I notified the FRC Rep't. that I would be collecting in White Mtns. & Mono Lk. area. Saw 3 dead Black-billed Magpie 2 mi S of Bishop + a FMarch Hawk ~5mi S. We were informed by Forest Service that the road up Silver Canyon was 4-wheel drive only, so we drove S towards Big Pine + got the road that leads N towards "Ancient Bridge" one area. The scenery from this road is fantastic - the rd. climbs to 10,000ft. The eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada is truly impressive. The White[s], at least from Big Pine N, were dominated by sagebrush low elevation, Pinyon-Juniper at mid to high elev., w/ Limber Bridlowm at higher elevations. At 8-10pm, saw 2 Kestrel, 10 Mt. Bluebird, Mt. Chickadee. We got to the Wyman Cr. road + it too said for 4-wheel drive vehicles. So, not seeing anything to this point that looked like Willow thicket[s] (5mi S of Big Pine) or even Passerella site), we headed down from ~9000' into Wyman Canyon. The road is quite rough + you need high

R.M. Zink 1979 Journal 900's+ Wyman Creek to Roberts Ranch, Inyo Co. Calif. 2 July (cont) clearance at the very last. We got to the base of the canyon + were very discouraged. After the tough desert there was no water + howling insight. At a brusk spot in the creek bed (Lantana), squeezed out a > 50. Black-thr. Gray Warbler, 2 Junco + 2+ Green-tailed Towhee. Engidaurus We continued on (post closed but unlocked gate) + finally found a small, isolated patch of 10'-20' dense willows (Salix sp.). I coll. 2 P. i. canescens. We continued on to "Roberts Ranch" which consists presently of 3 abandoned buildings on S side of road + a cabin on that. The cabin is apparently operated by a college in Big Spring at a handwritten sign says you're welcome, if you leave it as you found it. We made camp just E of Roberts Ranch (on road). Heard Fox + Song Sparrows; 3 July Up ~ 700. We headed out to check the willow clumps for Fox Sparrows. There is only 1 good size patch of willows many scattered plants. The main patch (essentially at Roberts Ranch) also marks the beginning of permanent water flow from a spring. The patch of willows is v. dense, ~5m + has bare (Rosa) reeds in interspaces. The patch is ~ 50 x 20m. We were yet discouraged because only 1 Fox Sp. was seen (Pnz 1040) + the other patch of willow were apparently too small to support any. There were a # of dead willows in the middle of the creek bed just E of Roberts Ranch - suggesting first the amount of flow has decreased. There are signs of cattle grazing. The valley has Rosa, Lantana + lots of tall grass. The canyon

R.M. Zink 1979 Journal Wyman Cr, 8100 - 7420ft, Inyo Co, Calif. 3 July (cont) walls are steep + partially covered by sagelands + some gingers + jimison / shades of cambian + pre-cambian meta-sedimentary rock fragments (tallus slopes). There was a stiff breeze in the afternoon + was mostly sunny. So, at least presently, Robert Ranch (=RR) marks the 1st occurrence of willows, as you go E in Wyman Canyon. Because of the low density, FoxSg, we packed up ~4:30pm headed down road (E), + the road does descend. We [see catalog local of] stopped at the next sizable willow patch (RM21044) but could only find 1 FoxSg. This willow growth has been seriously affected by cattle - they browse on the leaves, especially of young plants. Also, there are resultant paths through the thicket. We continued on to the next large patch (see catalog for local of RM21045-6) + camped here. For bird sp seen, see separate list. The surprising thing was the abundance of song sparrows, with outnumbered Fox considerably. 4 July Up 0600 - smut got in canyon, fairly cool + fair # of things moving. Hunted willow grows + got 2 FoxSg. + saw 3 others. Colt, a Digger or way back to camp. Found a beaver home up 3 separate foods. Spent rest of a.m. working on birds. Very windy in afternoon. About 1130 a group of 85+ Pigeon Sage descended canyon near our camp (see sp. ored). We worked the willows again 580 ft to 6530 + only heard 2 Fox Sg. Bestirned to camp + packed up. Went (or continued) further down Wyman Cr. There were several patches of

R.M. Zink 1979 Journal 5 Warner Mt., Modoc Loop, Calif. 28 July (cont'd) From our vantage point above on W side of Mill Creek, we could see nothing on the W facing side of Eagle Bl. & Fallback that resembled the "sparse streaks at base of rockslide" that Lindehl wrote contatling Fox Sparrows in 1924. It is possible that there are scattered brushy places tha that the birds are in willow s have left, but the aspen conifer perhaps also some such areas. However, there are a # of open places inside, & they are dominated by Salsix or grass & Mule Ears (tous). There is one spot near top (See Note: W Eagle Pt.) that might be brushy. At any rate, it seems as if this meadow changed in so years. The rest of the day, in driving around, we saw more open areas but they contained little or no brush - only grass & mule ears. The botanist for the USFS at Song Sparrow mentioned the Shields C. burn 70 acres replanted 1947 r is presently elderberry thickets.
