They seem to have sufficient foothold to one
day win out over the brush which is
presently dominant (85-100%, ≤4ft). The
brush is mostly Arctostaphylos w/ some
Tobacco bush, 2-3% Pines & some Castanopsis
(I think). The USFS previously bulldozed
brush into rows but there is lots more
brush. I originally suspected that this was
a failure on the part of USFS to control the
brush (1978 journal). However, as I noted above,
seeds grow 15-20 feet.
There seem to be ~100 Pines 4-15ft, that
will probably succeed into Pine forest
eventually. On the road to Project Old Lo.
(butmer Hwy 89 & turn off to this side) there's
a sign which says that trees were planted
1967/2 - However this may not be true for the
area in which I've worked the past two years.
says nothing about when the original burn
occurred (except that it was pre 1961). There
are a couple large Pines remaining but few
snags, some volcanic rock pils/ outcrops.
The soil is light colored & gravelly w/ small stones.
2 Aug.
Hunted early a.m. (w/ my boys), things were
rather still. There seemed to be a slight peak
in activity when the sun rose over West Project
Peak L.O., but nothing striking nor did it last
more than 5-10 minutes. By 0830 it was getting
