R.M. Zink 1978 Journal 22 Sept (a) drove to Sample Meadow (ygrndl (see notes May 1978) + on to Mt. Tom. Hunted same area as May 78, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Saw very little, collected 1 Entamine species + heard 1 Cassin Finch, Saw 0 Fox Sp. I think that Abio dlr. was perhaps too high or just too early for migrant P. Meca. Drove back to locality S of Shaver Lake + set 85 shaver traps; also got 3 Fox Sp. There was a fair amt of activity towards dusk - many Fox sp. calling; also R.B. Kuthatch, Stellar Jay, B.S. Towhee. En route on route to Sample Mdr. + Mt. Tom stopped at Kaiser Peak Meadow (T. 75, R. 26E, E½ SE .22) + shot 2 Belding Ground Sjs. - there was a colony (?) # unknown) in this meadow (which ran ½ mi.²) - also found ½" Bufo + a sm. frog. The Rd. from Hwy 91 to Sample Mdr is fairly good - goes over 8000' in some spots - some forest + grassy fields + rocks - little brush. 23 Sept. (At Shaver Lake) - 0630 cool, clear still. Opening of den season - worn yellow or red checked traps (RMZ 3/9, DOS 4/65) - all for anything were set near fallen logs on a manganita however I caught 1 mouse at base of oak tree in manganita during.
