R.M.Zink 1978 Journal see map - to Sagehen 4mi: E Ward Pl, Placer Co, California 6500-6705 16 July cont. + did birds, AT 5:00pm walked to Page Meadows. It's a neat place - quite secluded but accessible to shift bikes & cars. At meadow call a scolding Spotted Sandpiper 9am 5 June+, 10 Cassin Finch, 2 Robins Also walked downard other direction (toward tan) The descent to the tan (?Fireland) is steeper. The slope above rd. is 1° mixed manzanita & conifer Saw/heard: G.T. Towhee?, Fox Sparrow, Nashville Warbler, Bus. Creeper, 3+ Mt. Chickadee, W.Tanager, This area is worth no-collecting for Fox Sp. as the habitat is sufficiently extensive to support large #s (twot 20 in 2 days). 17 July Started singing in Tahoe City, headed up Hwy 89 to Truckee + got directions at District R.S. to Sagehen Creek Research Station (Univ.Calif.) about 7mi. N of the R.S. (+ jxn Hwy 80) thru rd. going left (west), just in front of double brown garage (above left). Follow this ~2miles to Sagehen Cr. Met Vern who manages the station year around. Worked on birds until 5pm p.m. & then met Marty Raphael, who doing last of yr. study on hole nesting birds in this area. He suggested several areas where it would be easy to collect L.iliaca. This area (not station) burned in 1960 (38000 acres) has been converted to assess post burn avifaunal succession (Bockrlynch 1972, p Bdk Raphael & Bock wils. Bird. 1978) - in 1975 Foxsparrow densities were 29.9 pairs/40.5ha(200acy) on the burned plot - while
