R.M. Zink 1979 Journal MVE to White Mtns., California 2 July Larry Conroy + I departed Berkeley for the White Mtns., to collect Passerella iliaca canescens. We drove E on Hwy 120. Was one of the most spectacular scenery days I've had. Drove through Yosemite were amazed by the geological sights (numerous cirques), Not the glacial lakes (= tarns), moraines. Saw ~30 California Gulls on the lake tower 7,000ft. At Tuolumne Meadows, saw 100+ Brown Blackbird, but little else. Stopped at Toga Pass + talked to some people working w/ Paul Sherman. Continued on E slope, past Mono Lake, to Bishop, where I notified the FRC Rep't. that I would be collecting in White Mtns. & Mono Lk. area. Saw 3 dead Black-billed Magpie 2 mi S of Bishop + a FMarch Hawk ~5mi S. We were informed by Forest Service that the road up Silver Canyon was 4-wheel drive only, so we drove S towards Big Pine + got the road that leads N towards "Ancient Bridge" one area. The scenery from this road is fantastic - the rd. climbs to 10,000ft. The eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada is truly impressive. The White[s], at least from Big Pine N, were dominated by sagebrush low elevation, Pinyon-Juniper at mid to high elev., w/ Limber Bridlowm at higher elevations. At 8-10pm, saw 2 Kestrel, 10 Mt. Bluebird, Mt. Chickadee. We got to the Wyman Cr. road + it too said for 4-wheel drive vehicles. So, not seeing anything to this point that looked like Willow thicket[s] (5mi S of Big Pine) or even Passerella site), we headed down from ~9000' into Wyman Canyon. The road is quite rough + you need high
