R.M. Zink 1978 Journal 6 mi W 7mi E Lassen Peak 7000', Shasta C, Caly. 28 July at few birds moving or calling. Did see a hawk (perl- [illegible] carrying something. Was surprising to find so few birds. I get the impression that my 2+ layered squawking may now alert birds rather than attract. Checked some trees & border area Pine Red or White Manzanita dominates shrub Fir Sitska Spruce, and the red X needed pin. 29 July 0600 drove to lower, extensive brushfield W Prospect L.O. brushfield 8137 hunted 26-28July N<br> extreme brushfield 4.0mi.<br>Ho/44<br>39 O Lassen Pk This has very startled soil through the new brush (mostly manzanita is 2'+ per-<br>meated w/ dead trails, comb<br>easy to walk. Also faintly<br>young (2'-15') Jeffrey Pine. Hunted 0708-0908 + got 7 Fox eg Sand/horn: Quail (?), Jack Jay, Nutthatch (w/B), ?ins chickadee, G.T. Tanher, Empidonax, O.S.Fly. Worked on birds<br>till 5:00pm. Hunted brushfield again to 9:00pm was basically same (+ bearish view). Collk for egc.
