R.M.Zink 1979 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey to Calj coast, between Big Sur Carmel 28 Feb. 15 Junco, 5 Cassin Finch, 4 Kestrel, 2 P.T. Hawk, 15 Gold- W Sparrow, 20 Crow, 5 Y.b. Magpie, 10 Scrub Jay, 3 Acorn Woodpecker, Flicker, 5 Scrub Jays. There was snow to ~ 1500. As we got lower towards Carmel, Saw 1 Red-shouldered Hawk +6 P.T.Hawk, In Carmel saw 15 New Gui, 5 Calif.. At Coast at Carmel R, saw: 3 Herman Gull, 2 Western, 3 Common Merg., 10 Calif. Gull. Drive S on Hwy 1. Saw ~10 Kestrel, 5-6 P.T. Hawk (2 yrs.), dor Westony fescue (fide RMT), Gold-W Sparrow. Took Palo Colorado Rd. to Bottchers Gap (elev 2000'), where rd. was closed by Forest Service. Walked down rd. (to Pico Blanco Scout Camp) - habitat mixture of deciduous oak- kermess(?), some chaparral (chanis? little Arctostaphylos?) + some groves of Redwoods. Saw: 10 Bushtit, 3 Acorn Woodpecker, 1 Horned Thrush, 12 Band-tailed Pigeon, 5 Junco. Some of the areas seemed likely to have P.Iliaca, especially w oak leaf litt + brush, but saw 0. Yesterday John Davis mentioned that he'd only caught 1 Fox Sp. late (in Nov.'78) where usually had have 25 + that the bird was a gray-headed (i.e. Sierra) form. Walt Koenig said he'd caught 1 (in Nov. '78) + that it was brown (i.e. Malaschnais group). At 12:00 noon, we returned to Hwy 1.
