R.M. Zink 1978 Journal June Fresno Co., Calif. 24 Sept (cont) adult+ 1 imm. Both were very interested in my squeaking & the adult flew upon 10ft. of my head. Also saw I heard: 3+ White-headed Woodpecker, 1 Hairy Woodpecker, Robins, R3 North, red chickadee, 3 Fox Sparrow (2880 singing). Thundree back through Kings Canyon Natl. Park to Cherry Gap (elev. 6892 ft.) & took rd to left (NW) to T. 17S, R 28E, E'1/2 sec. 18. Mostly brush w/ some young conifers; is the site of an old burn. The topography is rolling & fairly steep in places. Many large boulders. Coll. 4 Fox Sparrow, 1 Rosy Finch & 3 Ectemias. This would be an excellent local for breeding Fox Sparrows - coll 1 singing -> heard 2-3 others. Lots of small flies & Hemipterae flying about (& lots of Dacnis coronata and bonnet hawks than), Lots of Red Vireo in flocks in Salix & very restless - often flying about calling. Saw Empidonax (prob. difficult) in 6'8" Salix, 2-3 Townsend's Soli, 10-20 Junco, 10-20 American Lewspings, 5'Steller Jay, 20 Cedar Waxwings, R. C. Kinglet, Yellow Warbler. Vermis, 2 1/2 mi W Bald Mtn, 5400 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. 27 Oct. Drove to above locality from Berkeley w/ Del Lawson, Bob Seitz, Dr. Stranes, Doug Arrived 11:30 am. 28 Oct. Spent most of day collecting prep. Fox Sparrows.
