R.M.Zink 1979 Journal Berkeley to Shaver Lake, Fresno Co., Calif. 4 Oct. Susan Kaiser, Dave Good + D left MVZ for Shaver Lake. Saw 2 POR Tyto alba on Hwy 5 near Coral Hollow, many Buteo jamaicensis, 2 White-tailed Kites. Arrival Shaver Lake 9:00pm 3 mi. S 2 1/2 mi.; W Bald Mtn, 5400 ft, Fresno Co., Calif. 5 Oct. Up 0630 to sounder Ruf-cited Towhee + singing Passerculus iliaceus. Spent most of day hunting for Fox Sparrows. In a.m. (8700-0900) there was a lot of activity w/ large flocks of White-c. sparrows, Junco, few- Chipping Sparrows, Yellow-rumped Warblers + some Mt. Chickadees + Redd Whit-br. Wuthratch. Weather was mostly clear + warm all day. We hunted mainly chaparral-type habitat (see previous RMZ trips for habitat descriptions). 6 Oct. We hunted some of same areas as yesterday (see catalog of D.A. Good & S. Kaiser). There was a morning peak of activity w/ a flock of 150 Bewary Crossbills, 20+ Cedar Waxwings + various numbers (10- 20) White-c. sparrows + Cassin Finch. However by 0830 there was little activity. Decided to move camp to N/S Shaver Lake. Was colder last night + this a.m. There was a yellowjacket nest near camp + nowy continually harassed us (I was stung 2x yesterday). Last night we were going
