14 June Up ~0700 + drove to site 2 mi. E Real Mtn. Did 4 forest/sec transects. Then drove S towards Davis Campground. There is a large burned over area (5,000 acres) which burned in 1971. There are many standing + fallen dead trees + scattered singles + groups (live? -> Black Oak) Jeffrey Pine, White Fir + Incense Cedar. The Forest Service (2-4 workers) planted grass immediately after the fire to prevent soil erosion. But the grass outcompetes Jeffrey Pine seedlings so they haven't been able to replant. The Elderberry comes in front or the White cedar comes under it - so no one can make it either way. Thus, the USFS has eliminated a large expanse of potential 'chaparral' type habitat. We were advised that part Evans Flat the road descended below 500's so we moved counter north towards Rhyns Camp (on per camp). It decided to take a small road which cut off behind camp + we found to our surprise some rather vigorous Elderberry Riles + Rosewillia! In our driving around today we sighted some nest birds, incl. ?
