R.M. Zink 1978 Journal From Ca California Emis & Emi w Bald Int. 540ft. (Shaw Lake) 28 Oct (sat) Temp ~35 at 0600, got to 75 by 1030 + dropped again fairly early afternoon. Skies clear + light clouds. Coll. 7 Fox Sparrow males (see szg, acct.). This is my 3rd trip to this locality + a precise description of the habitat is elusive. There are substantial areas of level rock + large boulders. Patched fairly homogeneous brush (Manzanita + ceanothus) grows in its woodland setting & rocks. Some small but fairly homogeneous stands of trees - Sugar Pine, cedar (Cthorconyx), some scattered Oak. All this (+more) results in a rather heterogeneous complex. Thus a precise characterization of the habitat is different - other than to say it's a mosaic. This assemblage of niche habitat & micro-climate is undoubtedly important to the existence of many species - despite that this area is not homogeneous mountain chaparral. The Forest Service should recognize the importance of this type of habitat. A fair deal of bird activity today- although there seemed to be a peak at 0800-0900. Bird activity on cool a.m.'s seem to coincide w sun hitting the brush. Also I wasn't afield the entire day. There did seem to be a fall in activity on mid-day
