R.M.Zink 1974 Journal Kern Mt. Pine X Ventana to Calif [F&G 214,swtsec.33] 24 May (Sat) day wandering around. The area is predominantly open pine w/ scattered patches of brush [ceanothus ]. There are some creeks + considerable slopes in places although generally quite traversable. Some rocky outcrops. There's considerably range in age of the pines - some very old + young . Quite a few down fallen trees. Also fn interested, set 2 short nets out at 1630 + caught 1 Foxgland. Still snow (in patches) in woods. 25 May Up 0630. Cold + as yesterday, very windy. Set out down road towards "Condo Lookout". Again open pine w/ some brush + dense stands of young pine. About 3 1/2 r: 15 MA. Pines there are several large brush patches. Coll. 9 Fox Sparrows + returned to car + shot 1 more. On net (at brush - young pine) caught 1 Jones's [spotted?] Flycatcher, 1 Finch (photographed) + 1 Saw-whet Out - released all. Moved to Forest Glen Canyon. Returned to nets in evening - caught 1 Fox Sp. Spent ~1hr. looking for nests. 26 May Tried today to record @ photo + exam bird's nest @ key tree. Had little luck trying to photo Fox Sp. - seems that they're a bit spooky or hard to approach singing ?? (for vocalizing). Rvz Forest Glen. evening after an. Saw Tank Hwyl [creeks] on trail.
