R.W.Zink 1979 Journal 67 Oct. 1/4 mi. E Fly Mtn, 2040m, Fresno Ca, Calif. Fox Sparrow - 25 kernel 11 December 0630 left MVZ w/ Susan Kaiser & David Good headed for Lake Co. Calif. We intended to do some general collecting plus call wintering Fox Sp. especially. Drove N on Hwy. 101 to Ukiah r then cut off to Potter Valley r continued on to Lake Pillsbury. Drove to W end of lake - there are some brushy flat areas just N of road r near airfield. We continued on (up) 750m finally stopping at T. 17N, R. 10W, SW1/4 sec. 36 -- . From Lk. Pillsbury to here, the habitat is mixed coniferous or chaparral. At our campsite r coll. locality, the habitat is (A-85ft.) 5-60% knobcone pine, 0-5% Yellow Pine, 0-5% Fir, 5-85% chaparral (2nd sp. of Arctostaphylos, Chamise, 0-5% Madrona, Conothus, 0-30% scrub-oak). We hunted all day; Lots of Fox Sp. r went to Set 3 nets. 12 Dec. V 707am. Temp. low 20°F, clear today as yesterday. Hunted all day. There are many trails to Y-whal roads. I was impressed at how easy one could walk through the chaparral - some areas were very dense, but it seemed the impenetrable kind of chaparral I hunted last 1 April near Pozo Pk. Am not sure if this area burns regularly or not (I think I saw a couple burned stumps). The topography was hilly, w/ some fairly level spots r some fairly steep areas. There were some dry creek beds - I spent 30 min. staring
