R.M.Zink 1979 Journal Mono Lake vicinity, Mono Co. Calif. 13 July We then drove to Mono Lake, stopped & asked Dave Winkler where likely Fox Sp. locations could be. He suggested above Grant +/- Walker Lakes. We drove the Grant rd. & it's too developed. There are some patches of possible Fox Sp. brush above lake, but steep & basically unsuited. Another old locality is "Parker Cr., 7500 ft" - but Today, there's no suitable habitat that's not in "Wilderness Area" + :: no shooting. We drove North to Walker Lk. - there's a gate (locked) preventing you from getting nearer than ~ 2 mi. Frustrated, we then drove to Virginia Cr., a supposed Fox Sp. breeding site (Robley, 1939 in Condon - also cited by Gains 1977 & Grinnell Miller 1944). There were no suitable looking areas & The entire stream is basically one cowpath full of trailers. We returned to Walker Lk. & I walked to the SW. of the lake but ~ 1/2 mi. from it. The hillsides are brushy, being dominated by some of some mahogany + what looks like a Ceanothus. I waddled through some of this & saw o Fox Sp. - just b.m.-f. Towhee & Brama Sparrow. We went next into Lee Vining, where we met David Gains. He noted that Fox Sp. seem to be where there's some heterozyme in arms of brush spp. But Winkler said (earlier) that you ascend until you get Ceanothus. Gains also thought the
