Woodsford vicinities, Alpine to Lake
(cord)
18 July
Brush for Fox Sparrows. There's about Ribs, Prunus,
Artemisia + a few Antelope brush. There's also lots of
large granite boulders - almost too much coming
for much duff to accumulate as it looks as though
it would be washed away fairly easily. I drove up
road to lake. There's a spot about 0.8mi.
from the turn to — where a fire went
through some time ago. There's still lots of live Jeffrey
pines + a considerable amount of young (6-8in.) mon-
zanita. There are a few spots where it's higher (2ft) +
some Ribs but in general, the good brushy areas
are on the W side of the road, as there's a strip
of brush below sage/Ribs + above road. I sat 2
Fox Sparrowed at noon. There are lots of scattered
pinto fives the brush is interspersed. Returned
to camp just 4 day. Rained late afternoon.
19 July
Hunted strip of brush across from campground in
early a.m. Again noted the brush spp. heterogeneity. There
were few birds seen + not too many Cassinella iliaca. At
rained mid-day, we headed towards Fickett Peak in
late afternoon + hunted along rd. to Fickett flc.
20 July
0600-1200 Hunted area 2mi. W Fickett Creek. This
area is a mosaic of micro-habitats, but sufficient brush
to support a large density of Fox Sparrows (see pp.
acox).
