R.M.Zink 1978 Journal Sonora to Bear Valley, Tuolumne + Alpine Co, California 10 July (sat) The road was unblem. Stopped at Hells Kitchen near Wrightwood Victa Rd. + shot a Foxgrouse at 8:30 p.m.; heard others. Stanislaus River, 3mi.S, 1m.W Bear Valley Tuolumne Co, Calif. r Alpine Co. 11 July Drove to Mt. Pelz Ski area (T.7N, R18E,sec.5+6) at 0630 [illegible], elev. 7500-8000 ft. Hundreds fairly steep slope (to 7900') for (hr Many Green tailed Towhees, 4? Fox Sparrows, Juncos, Solitary Vireo, ? Yell Warbler. Then drove Southerly to 1m. S Onion Valley + took Rd 7 N01 (Stanislaus R. Rd) to Sugar Hill. There is some brush but seemed mainly to parallel the road. On way back, past "undeveloped" Stanis. R. Canyon. found a fairly extensive brush field + rocky (granite) area. Got 5 Fox Sparrows 0815-1015, + saw there several others. The area has numerous granite outcroppings to mixed brush (Ceanothus) manzanita) + conifer. On some areas the conifers are fairly dense. The elevation is 6200'-6300'. Returned to Stanislaus R. Camped at 6,000' & worked on birds, saw at camp: 2? Foxsparrow, 8? Stellar Jay, Dom Creeper, Mt. Chickadee, Vireo-sf, 4? Robin, 10-61-headed Grosbeak, w.tan. Returned to coll. local of this area & coll. 3 more Freqs?, saw little else (Kestrel, Juncos, R.B.Nuthatch,S.T. Towhee). Returned to camp 8:30 p.m. 12 July 0600 Drove to local S of Big Meadow Canyon - a Forester told me yesterday of a fairly extensive brushfield facing S. Had like the area coll. yesterday except there probably more trees; elev. 6400'-6508'. Coll. 4 Freqs? + saw/heard others saw/heard: 3? Mt. Chickadee, 2? R.B.Nuthatch, Dom Creeper, 2? Robin, 1 B.t. Pigeon, 3 Juncos, unid. wander in brush, Stellar Jay, 3?, R.S.Towhee (+Tow.)
