Birds of Trail Canyon, Esmeralda Co., Nevada (cont)
7 July (cont)
p.m. 5th to near 7th July
Junco 6 - in willows, w/ fledglings
Brenner Sp. 10 - canyon sides, incl. fledglings
White-G Sparrow 6 - willows w/ open boggy meadow
Fox Sparrow 15 - at most 408 singing on time (see p. 4cat)
Song Sparrow 20 - willows, incl. 2 nests - (see p. 4cat)
(journal cont) + Rock Wren - several singing from 1gr rocks of canyon slopes
In both places, range cattle have had their effect, by
causing the meadows to turn into hummocks + numerous
trails through willows [by destruction of undergrowth].
There were birds absent from Trl. [cf Minidation] like
Ruf-s, Towhee, Laz Bunting, B.A. Grosbeak, + others (compare lists).
We drove down Trail Canyon w/ the idea of going
to Christovich Cr. However, only 14 mi. E of camp, I
heard a singing of Fox Sp. We stopped to locate it. There is
extensive willow growth along Trail Cr. & I had
(apparently) counsel on the way up, that for Fox
Sparrows, higher (cler.) is better. Well shit! In
the next 2 mo. I call. 10 Fox Sp. in the willow
growth (see catalog for local). Again, the valley is
surrounded by Pinyon, Juniper + Sage. The burn
mentioned previously is evident, w/ burnt stumps.
Dead standing willow may be natural but I think the
fire killed off a fair amount. There are some dense
thickets of willow/celery/birch (75-18') + some meadow areas
w/ low willows, willow snags, Rosa, Rilex - settled.
