5 July Trail Canyon 9000-9400ft Esmeralda Co. Nevada
At Andison Cr., saw 1st prc 6:11, Churls, 13 Belted Gny Warbler, 10 Song Sparrow, 0 Fox Sp. The willows seem to be younger.
The road to Trail Canyon is open & has several cut-offs so you must be sure to watch map closely. We camped at the end of a jeep trail (see catalog for exact trail), where there is fairly continuous willow, alder + waterbirch along Trail Creek. We hunted up canyon & got 1 Fox Sp. & saw 1 other.
6 July 8 a.m. 4 p.m., walked essentially to headof canyon at about 9600 ft. There's an extensive patch (3/4mi x 1/2mi) of willow, birch + alder - bordered by soggy sandhillbides. The vegetation (willow etc.) is bet. 3-18ft., & there are some dense thickets. There are several streams which meander along, & obviously have changed course several x's. The area apparently burned fairly recently but how long doesn't matter. There are several areas dead burnt without a good deal of burnt wooden ground. There's also a small stand of red Mahogany. There are some high spots in the middle w/ sage as well as some boggy wet areas. There are active springs on the S side of the canyon, & perhaps elsewhere. Caray et al noted this is diff. than Elzyan Canyon. First alt higher by 1000-1500ft (willowflat etc.) Also, the canyon sides are granite. The canyon is wide, + more fields in. There are much more extensive shrub stands of Willow, Alder + Waterbirch (last time looking from 4 years).
