Brad R. Moon 1987 Journal 1 4 April Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino County, CA. T8N R13E sec 4 SW/4. 2200 PST. Bruce Wagg and I arrived at the cabin at the UC Granite Mountains Reserve, hid our food from the rats, and went to sleep.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 2 5 April Dorners Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernadino county, CA. 0830 PST. Philippe Cohen, the Granite Mountains Reserve Manager, showed up to welcome us and explain how the utilities and water system work. Outside its mostly sunny with slight wind and ~ 25% cloud cover 1216 PST. ~20°c in shade, ~26° in sunshine; cloud cover is increasing. I notice that the yucca trees are flowering as are many very small purple annuals that are growing very low on the ground. Sparse grasses around the cabin are green and growing. I can hear the buzz of bees and flies flying around from bush to bush.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 3 5 April 1 km west of Foshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino County, CA. T10N R14E Sec 31 w'1/2. 1500 PST. Bruce and I left our car at the first steep hill along the pipeline road between Vulcan Mine and Foshay Pass. It's breezy, with ~40% cloud cover. We hiked up the wash that follows Goldstone Spring Road from the pipeline road up the mountain. We started at ~1280 m in elevation in steep, hilly terrain with many species of 1/2 m high shrubs and also creosote bush, cholla, and some large catclaw acacias along the ravine edges. Wash is sandy, with reddish soil on nearby boulder strewn hills. Just below the intersection of Goldstone Spring Road and the power line Road we found two old, rusty, square topped pit-fall traps in the wash. Nothing in them but beetles. West of the wash, we saw bunch of cows grazing on the grasses. I found a Gilbert skink under a rock (species account: Gilbert skink). From the power line Road, we followed the Road to Goldstone Spring up the ravine. Above the power lines, at about 1340 m, were a few sparse junipers. Around the spring and up the

D.R. MOON 1987 Journal 4 5 April \frac{1}{2} km southwest of Feshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernadino county, CA. TION R14E Sec 31 W'\frac{1}{2}. mountain are pinyon pines and some oaks in the wash bottom. The wash below the spring is steep sided, and we found some rock walls and old junk left from miners probably. At Goldstone Spring there's a large flat area that cows obviously frequent. \frac{1}{4} km southwest of (and uphill from) the spring I found another Gilbert skink (see species account) under a rock just upslope from the wash bottom. We went back down to the spring and went up the ravine southeast of Goldstone Spring. We found some water at the surface, running slowly for about 10 m, and with algae in it. We also found a mine shaft (vertical) about 3m above the ravine bottom; it was filled with water about 3m below the ground level. Then back to Dorner's cabin for rest and dinner.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 5 6 April Unpaved road from Kelso to Cornfield Spring canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. T11N R13E Sec 32 nw'/4. 1120 PST. Bruce Wagg and I parked on the rocky road about 3Km down the bajada from the ridge of mountain that extends out to this old road. This road is not driveable by passenger car anymore. We walked up toward Cornfield Spring canyon. Creosote bush and yucca are only most prevalent plants in this bajada. Various small, low growing red, blue, and yellow annual flowers grow sparsely over the ground. Bruce and I saw a juvenile whiptail lizard and several utas on the rocky plain up to the canyon. In the canyon, along a north facing rock wall with several small caves in it, a wild burro grunted at us as we walked along the base of its hillside. The wash in the canyon was gravelly with large creosote bushes scattered throughout. 1255 PST. we found an adult o' collared lizard on a pile or rocks(species account: collared lizard). It was mostly sunny, 4/ ~25% cloud cover, slight breeze, and ~25°C where we

B.R.MOON 1987 Journal 6 6 April near mouth of cornfield spring canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. TION RISE Sec 11 nw '14. could the lizard. 1300 PST. After collecting the collared lizard, we continued up the canyon for about 10 min. until we stopped to catch a small desert spiny lizard on a large rock outcrop (see species account). Further up the canyon, the canyon walls became steeper and higher. We came across a running stream (a small one though) with a lot of algae growing bright green in it. Part of the stream was sided by dense growths of mormon tea (I think). This stream is probably only annual. on a terrace above the south side of the wash & stream there was an old mining trailer with a Kelso corporation label and Houston, Texas address. Inside it, we found a newspaper from 1965 with ads for cars and bicycles that were very cheap. There road the trailer must have been towed up doesn't seem to exist anymore. Just up the canyon from the trailer was a triple fork of the canyon; the south fork went up a steep mountainside, the north fork

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 7 6 April Middle fork of Cornfield Spring Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. TION RIBE Sec II center. headed up another long canyon toward Cornfield spring, the center fork (which we followed) led to a spring with a moderate amount of flowing water. The source of water itself was inaccessible due to extremely dense willows and Ephedra bushes. Above this spring there was considerably less water flow than below it. 1400 PST. It started to rain, and continued raining as we headed back down the canyon for about 10 min. At the confluence of the middle and north forks of the canyon (dry washes) we found a short (~3m) horizontal mine shaft with what looked like greenish, oxidized copper ore in it, and an old wooden ladder on the shaft floor. We also found several small (~5cm) mud wasp nests on the ceiling of the cave. On our way out of the canyon, on the north side of the wash at the canyon mouth, Bruce found a giant desert hairy scorpion under a railroad tie finishing up with a smaller scorpion it was eating. We collected the scorpion to keep as a fieldwork mascot. Then home to Doner's Camp.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 8 7 April Kelbaker Road 6.7 miles north of highway 40, San Bernardino county, CA. 0950 PST. On our way to Barstow, Bruce and I found a road-killed Mojave rattlesnake being eaten by a turkey vulture. Upon closer look, most of the 3-ft snake had been eaten out from the underside by the vulture. Along Kelbaker road on boulder outcrops we found two desert spring lizards that hid in cracks in the rocks when we approached. We noosed (and released on the spot) a small ? of ~15cm SVL; the other one was apparently a male and much larger. Later, from Barstow we went to Victorville to look for a Wells Fargo bank. We never found one. When we returned toorners camp later in the afternoon, we went for a mountain bike ride along the road and campsites toward Granite Pass from Dorners. I noticed a lone dark cloud above raining into the air, but no water was reaching the ground. Disappearing rain. After dark we night drove Kelbaker road and found only a hatching glossy snake (see species account) probably from last Fall's clutch. Then back home.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 9 8 April Mitchell Caverns State Natural Preserve, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. TION R14E Sec 21 W'/2. 1420 PST. Bruce and I hiked up the trail from the park headquarters toward Crystal Spring. The vegetation in the canyon is beautiful and lush compared to the lower creosote bush flats. Throughout the steep sided, rocky canyon were diverse growths of cacti and shrubs including Acacia gregii, Opuntia acanthocarpa, O. erinacea, Yucca schidigera, Y. baccata, Rhus trilobata, Echinocereus engelmannii, and many others. Up the canyon and mountainsides Pignons and Junipers formed an open woodland. About '1/2 way from the park buildings to the spring I found moisture under large boulders and what looked like forms of mosses and ferns growing at the edges of overhanging rocks. From John Kelso-Shelton, the park ranger, I learned that Jim Davis, the regional park supervisor with whom I had such trouble getting a permit to capture reptiles in the park, was not at all well liked by other park service employees, to put it mildly. John Kelso-Shelton, on the other hand, was very friendly and helpful to Bruce and me. He

August September 1945 Dear [illegible], I hope you are well and that your family is doing well. I am writing to tell you about my experiences in the war. We were sent to a training camp near London, where we learned how to use various weapons and tactics. We also had some physical training, including running, jumping, and shooting practice. After completing our training, we were deployed to France as part of the Allied forces. Our mission was to liberate occupied territories and support resistance movements. The fighting was intense, with heavy artillery bombardments and fierce infantry combat. We encountered many challenges, such as difficult terrain and enemy ambushes. Despite the hardships, I remained determined to see our mission through. My unit worked closely with local civilians, providing medical aid and supplies where possible. As we advanced further into Germany, we faced increasing resistance from Nazi forces. The final push towards Berlin was particularly brutal, with fierce battles fought in urban environments. Eventually, the war came to an end, marking a significant turning point in history. We were among those who witnessed the surrender of German troops. Moon 1987 Journal 10 8 April Mitchell Caverns State Natural Preserve, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. told us about access to other parts of the mountain range, like Bonanza King Mine and Wild Horse canyon. So soon enough, Bruce and I were headed toward Bonanza King Mine. We saw some quail and chukkas around the windmill just below the mine entrance road. Around the mine we searched the old debris and ghost town leftovers (roads, stone walls, and junk); we found boxes of rock core samples all around, and night lizards and woodrat nests under pieces of old corrugated tin on the ground (see species account: Desert Night Lizard). The oldest date we found on the old stone walls (carved in) was 1956 (I think). Maybe that was when the town was deserted and the first graffiti carvers passed through. As we walked up the rocky, brushy, narrow, and very steep sided canyon, we didn't see any herps out. On our way back down to the car at the mine, I found a beautiful rosy boa under a rock

Moon 1987 Journal 11 8 April Bonanza king mine, Providence Mountains, back to Dorner's camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. on a barren talus slope of mine tailings (species account: Rosy Boa). On our way home up Kelbaker Road, just after dark with a half moon shining between the clouds, we found a juvenile Mojave rattlesnake on the pavement. Just up the road, we found another Mojave rattlesnake, but this one killed by a car (species account: Mojave Rattlesnake). Then back to Dorner's camp again.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 12 9 April Trail from Granite Cove to Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. T8N R13E Sec's 18, 12, 7, 6, 5. 1000 PST. Bruce Wagg and I embarked on our trail-mending tour on the trail from Granite cove to Dorner's Camp. We began at the head of Granite cove and proceeded to re-flag and mark with rock piles the trail. Approaching the saddle between the plateau and Cottonwood canyon we saw several fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) on rocks and pino and juniper stumps all along the trail. Also along the ridge, we saw about 6 turkey vultures soaring above the mountains. The pinon-juniper woodland was denser along the north facing slope above Cottonwood canyon. The woodland above the mouth of Cottonwood wash had burned in the past, and the only plants making a strong comeback so far were the smaller shrubs. The trail was hard to follow in this area so we flagged and marked the trail heavily. We got to the end of the trail, on the ridge northeast of Snake spring at 1600, making it a 6 hour hike.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 13 10 April Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernadino County, CA. Took the day off today to hang around Dorner's. 1600 PST. I found a desert tortoise next to the square water tank at Dorner's cabin; it was in the shade and not active when I found it (species account: Desert tortoise). 1830 PST. Bruce and I drove to Ludlow via Hwy 66. On Kelbaker Road 2.8 miles north of Hwy 40 we found a large Mojave rattlesnake on the road; that was the fifth one we've seen on that stretch of Kelbaker Road in the past five days. North of Hwy 66 on Kelbaker Road we found a sidewinder with 9 rattle segments and the tip broken off (species account: sidewinder). We also found a road-killed patch nosed snake.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 14 11 April 1 Km Southwest of Arrowweed Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. T9N R3E Sec 27 nw'ly. 1257 PST. Bruce and I found an adult ♀ leopard lizard on the dirt road to the Pine Tree Ranch site. Habitat was flat, rocky, and Creosote bush-Yucca vegetation. At Arrowweed Spring, we found some standing water, mud mostly, and a lot of cow signs. We found another adult ♀ leopard lizard in the shade of a large rock in the dirt road. This lizard was emaciated and had dirt (dried mud) on her underside around her hind legs, feet, and cloaca, perhaps from laying and burying eggs recently (species cut. Leopard Lizard). The weather was very windy with 75-80% hazy cloud cover, but warm (~20°C). We also drove up into Quail Spring Basin, checked it out, and then went back to Dorner's camp. About 1700 PST, people from John Carothers class began to arrive at Dorner's camp from Cabrillo College. They made a lot of noise moving in.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 15 12 April Road from Globe Canyon to Summit Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. T11N R14E Sec's 9, 16. We drove up through Globe Canyon (in a Buick sedan - 2 wheel drive) and up the right fork of the road toward Summit Spring. We stopped at the edge of the piñon-juniper woodland about 1 km north of the spring and walked to the spring. Piñon pines and junipers grow throughout the hilly area and up to and over the summit. Much of the area is rocky or soily with occasional rock outcroppings. A few trees are dead or fallen. Sunny, windy, and cool out with no wildlife to be seen. We found a ? desert spiny lizard under a fallen piece of wood (species account: Desert Spiny Lizard). Then we hiked up to the summit and looked over to the east in Beacher and Barber Canyons. On our way down & out of the canyon (by car.) we stopped to chase a collared lizard, zebra tailed lizard, and a whip-tailed lizard (species account: western whip-tail). Overall, Globe Canyon is drivable by 2 wheel drive passenger car.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 16 13 April Dorner's Wash at intersection of Kelbaker Road and Interstate 40, San Bernardino County, CA. On our way back from Cediz in Bruce's car, we had to stop at the I-40 underpass on Kelbaker Road to let his car cool off (it was overheated). So we checked out the wide, sandy wash southeast of the underpass. We saw several juvenile desert iguanas, and a few adult ones in the sparse, clumped vegetation of the wash (species account: Desert Iguana). We caught a juvenile iguana, checked it out, and released it.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 17 14 April Dorner's Camp and Bunny Club, Granite Mountains to Bonanza King Mine, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino County, CA. Bruce and I are tired of the mess and noise from the Cabrillo college class at Dorner's camp so we decided to pack up & camp at Bonanza king mine in the Providence mountains. First, we went to visit Ken Norris and the JESc field quarter students at the Bunny club in the Granites. They were going on small group hikes, looking at plants, animals, geology, and weather of the area. On our way to Bonanza King Mine, I noticed that the creosote bushes along Essex Road are beginning to flower. we arrived at Bonanza King mine early in the afternoon and after poking around the old ghost town, packed our backpacks and headed up Bonanza King Canyon. We carried ten buckets between us to put in as pitfall traps. It was a very hot hike with the weight on our backs. We the south fork of the canyon and less than 1/2 km south of the confluence of forks, climbed a steep, talus hill about 15 m high to continue up the canyon.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 18 14 April Bonanza king mine and canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernadino county, CA. Half way up the hill we found what looked like an ammonite fossil that had crystallized in a large limestone boulder. Just above the hill, we left our packs in the canyon and went up canyon to look for pitfall trap sites. The canyon was narrow, steep sided, and very brushy; it was in sparse piñon-juniper woodland. Up the canyon even more we started finding more fossils of what looked like sea plants and corals. We found larger fossils of clams (or brachiopods?). I found a talus slope on the north side of this canyon that contained fossils in this grey limestone; some of the limestone was other other colors too - brownish, and even purple. Occasionally, we found a different kind of rock with a crystallized, mushroom shaped fossil in it. These rocks were darker, almost black in color, and were heavier than similar sized limestone chunks. We salvaged several rocks with many different fossils in them in about 2 hours before heading back down the canyon.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 19 14 April Bonanza King Mine and Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. We couldn't find flat spots big enough for us so we headed back down to make camp at the canyon mouth. Didn't put in any pitfall traps today, but left them in the canyon to put in later. On the canyon bottom above the mouth some distance, I found a large rosy boa stretched across the rocky wash bottom at 1755 PST. The canyon wash shady, but still warm before dark. This snake was in the canyon just below the lowest piñon pines in the area (species account: Rosy Boa). We set up a camp at the top of the old ghost town south of the mine. I went to sleep just after the orange full moon rose above the horizon and became white and round in the night sky.

B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 20 15 April Bonanza King Mine and Providence ghost town, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. We both woke up at sunrise this warm morning. While I was my hiking gear ready, Bruce found a grey Speckled Rattlesnake asleep under a limestone boulder. We both Got our cameras and took some photos of it. Then we hiked up the main, north fork of the narrow, steep sided grey limestone canyon above the mine. The canyon bottom was very brushy with dense Desert Almond bushes and large catclaw acacias that had not leafed out yet. Above the rocky wash bottom, there were grasses and Agaves on the steep canyon sides. We put in five pitfall traps at the intersection of the large south fork with the main fork of the canyon. This was at the lower limit of P?on Pines in the canyon. Our traps were plastic five gallon buckets sunk into the ground so that their mouths were flush with the ground. We covered them with dead, fallen shrub branches and rocks, leaving enough space for small animals to crawl through. Digging the holes was very hard work; we moved more rocks than sediment and soil.

R. Moon 1987 Journal 21 13 April Bonanza King Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Then we hiked up the brushy, rugged north fork of the canyon to a shear approx. 10 m cliff that we could not pass. From there we could see a large limestone natural arch with some Pinyon Pines growing out and near it. The cliff we stopped at was at about 1650 m. On our way back down out of the canyon in the hot, midday sun, we put in three more pitfall traps at the canyon mouth. This area is in Yucca / Creosote/Catclaw Acacia shrubland and a broad sloping bajada of mixed soil and rocks from the canyon. On our hike we saw only a few Whiptailed Lizards and Side-Blotched lizards in the area around the mouth of the canyon. Then we left in the mid afternoon and drove back to the Granite Mountains.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 22 16 April Granite Mountains to Barstow, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I tried to go to Barstow today before noon but ran into problems. My car broke down on highway 40 about 6 miles east of Ludlow at 0930 PST. Bruce sat in the car until about 1330 PST while I hitched a ride into Ludlow twice. The first time I bought some diesel fuel (I had to leave a $30.00 deposit for the fuel can) and fuel conditioner. After getting back to the car and trying the fuel & conditioner, which didn't work, we tried to figure out what was wrong. The only part on the diesel engine that we both recognized was the air cleaner. We still couldn't get the car started. So I got another ride into Barstow and called Philippe Cohen at the Granites; he came to pick us up and drive us back. Then we took his truck and towed my car all the way to Barstow, using the old Highway 66 (now the National Trails Highway). We parked the car in a parking lot and went to camp at Owl Canyon, northwest of Barstow. We found a longnose snake and two rattlesnakes there, a sidewinder and a Mojave Rattlesnake at 2130 PST.

3.R. MOON 1987 Journal 23 17 April Barstow, San Bernadino co., CA. Bruce and I went to the Honda auto dealer to check about fixing my car; they couldn't get to it for a few more days so we took it to Larrys Convenience Center where they could fix it within a day or two. Labor charges for mechanic work on cars is cheap in Barstow relative to the Bay Area; Larry's charges were $30.00 /hour plus parts. Then we did our laundry and shopped for food. We drove back to the Granites at about 1400 PST.

S.R. MOON 1987 Journal 24 18 April Granite Mountains to Barstow, San Bernardino co., CA. I got a ride into Barstow with John Carothers to pick up my car from the shop where it was being fixed. Then I shopped for some food in Barstow before driving back to the Granites. At night, Bruce Waggy and I visited Ken Norris' UCSC field quarter class at the Bunny Club in the Granites. We all drank quite a bit of tequila and sang songs to two guitar players until midnight. Before Bruce and I left, we showed the group a Rosy Boa that we caught at Bonanza King Mine and some of the fossils that we had collected in Bonanza King canyon. When Bruce and I drove back to Dorner's camp at midnight, it was [illegible] cold, windy, and dark.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 25 19 April Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino CO., CA. Bruce and I stayed at the cabin for most of the day, reading and cleaning the cabin. Outside, it was sunny but windy and cold. At about 1400 PST an old man walked up to the cabin to ask us for help; he had two flat tires on his old truck and was stuck in a sandy wash. Bruce drove him back to his trailer between the Kelso Pines and the Granites to get his spare tires. They picked me up on their way back to the truck between Dorner's Camp and Cottonwood canyon and out near Kelbaker Road. The man was very tall and heavy built; he mostly mumbled when he spoke and was very hard to understand. We helped him fix his truck and he offered us eight dollars for our help; we accepted his money. Bruce said that the man said he has lived in the area for a long time and that he remembered one of the original owners and residents of Dorner's Camp. Late in the afternoon, I went to the

Aunt I know what I want to do. It's just that I can't find the courage to say it out loud. But if you're asking me, then I'll tell you this: I'm not afraid of anything anymore. Not even death itself. Because I've learned something important along the way— That love is everything we need to survive.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 26 19 April Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bunny Club to visit Ken Norris' field class. I stayed for about 4 hours. When I got back to Dorner's camp after dark, Bob Macey and Ted Pappenfuss were here talking to Bruce. Bob said that he would be down in about 10 days to help us with our Providence Mountains reptile survey and to begin his fieldwork in Afton Canyon on the Mojave River. They didn't stay long, then drove back back to Las Vegas to fly back to Oakland that night.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 27 20 April Bunny Club, near Cone Spring, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA I visited Ken Norris's' field class this morning. Norris and some of the students were taking microclimate measurements under and around the granite boulders of the Cone Spring area. The lowest temperature they found was about 56° F under a large boulder where there was moist sand. Foshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce Wagg and I drove to Vulcan Mine at about 1530 PST and hiked up over Foshay Pass to see how difficult it would be to hike over the the pass and to Blind Spring with pitfall traps and shovels. We decided it would be a long hike and that we would do it at a later date. at Foshay Pass, we found two Collared Lizards under different rocks at about 1630 PST, when it was getting cool for the lizards to be very active (Species account: Collared Lizard). 3.R. MOON 1987 Journal 28 20 April Vulcan Mine Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. On our way out of the Vulcan mine, we stopped along the road below the ridge of hills extending out to the road and caught two zebra-tailed lizards in the rocky/sandy wash near the road. Then we headed back to Dorner's Camp in the Granite Mountains.

S.R. MOON 1987 Journal 29 21 April Vulcan Mine, Providence Mountains, San Bernadino co., CA. 1630 PST. Bruce and I drove up to Vulcan Mine and looked around the pit mine and pond at the pit's bottom. I found some small rocks with tiny cubic pyrite crystals in it. Next we drove to the road that connects the pipeline road with the powerline road and parked at the bottom of the connecting road. We carried some buckets and shovels up to Goldstone Spring, where we put in five pitfall traps (three at the the spring itself and two under a desert almond bush above the dripping pipe). We found a large grey, pink tailed speckled rattlesnake under the almond bush below the dripping pipe (Species account: Speckled Rattlesnake). Goldstone Spring is at the southwest edge of a large, flat, cattle-stomped area. The surrounding hillsides are rocky & steep, with a few live Piner Pines; most of the area is relatively barren with signs of a past fire. The spring itself consists of water dripping from a pipe into a half- barrel and then flowing a few meters down into some large desert almond bushes; the water then dries up just below the bushes.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 30 21 April Spring southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. There is another small spring about 1/8 mile southeast of Goldstone Spring; it is not on the "Fountain Peak" 7.5 minute USGS topographic map. At that spring, we put in three pitfall traps ( five gallon plastic buckets sunk in the ground up to the top of the bucket mouth) in the narrow, sandy wash along the flowing water. We also put in two more traps along the bouldery sides of the wash above the spring. The generally barren, burned area extends past this spring up to the mountain ridges to the south. Ken Norris' UCSC field trip class left the Bunny Club today to head back to Santa Cruz before their next field trip.

3.R. MOON 1987 Journal 31 22 April Granite Cove, Granite Mountains (near kelso), San Bernardino co., CA. I spent the day draining the fuel tank on a diesel buick. I had to jack the car up, remove the fuel tank, siphon the diesel and water out, and reinstall the tank under the car. I siphoned about 2/3 of a gallon of water out of a 15 gallon tank. I think a lot of the water had been accumulating for several months, but I suspect that most of the water came from Ludlow's truck stop diesel. Philippe Cohen, director of the Granite Mountains Natural Reserve, told me that he has had problems with water in his diesel fuel (from Ludlow) for his generator. After I fixed the fuel tank, I returned to Dorner's camp to relax for the rest of the afternoon.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 32 23 April Canyon North of Vulcan Mine Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. 1000 PST. Bruce Wagg and I parked on Vulcan Mine Road just west of the first mountain ridge that reaches the paved road and hiked northeast up into the large canyon that we saw from the road. The distance from the road to the canyon was deceiving; we thought we could reach the canyon mouth in about 20 min, it took us about an hour just to reach the small wash fork at the south edge of the main canyon. Below the canyon mouth, we saw several whiptail, side-blotched, and zebra-tailed lizards on the desert pavement along the wash edge. We also heard a few birds singing in the area; Bruce saw some Chukars. On our way up the mouth of the canyon, we saw the first flowering chollas in the Granite-Providence Mountains area. Creosote bushes, Hedgehog cacti, and several other species of very small annuals were also flowering. In the canyon, we didn't see very many animals because it had gotten hot. We turned around at the first pison pines at 1400m and hiked down and left.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 33 24 April Doner's Camp, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino Co., CA Bruce and I stayed at the cabin most of the day. Outside weather was mostly warm, breezy, 50-75% high cloud cover. At noon, we drove to the post office in Kelso and on our return at 1235 PST we found an adult Patch-nosed snake on the edge of the paved road (Species account: Patch-nose snake). At sunset, we drove to Hwy 66 (National Trails Highway) and then east for about 20 miles looking for snakes. On Kelbaker Road 5 miles south of Hwy 40, we found a road killed Mojave Rattlesnake; this snake, and almost all the other road killed rattlesnakes we found have had their rattles cut off. On Cadiz Road, we found two shovel-nosed snakes (Species account: Shovel-nosed snake). About 13 miles east of Cadiz Road on Hwy 66, we found two leaf-nosed snakes, one dead, the other alive (Species account: leaf- nosed snake). And on our way back up Kelbaker Road, we found a small Lyre snake at 2045 PST at Windy Point where the Bristol Mountains meet Kelbaker Road (Species account: Lyre snake).

R MOON 1987 Journal 34 25 April Powerline road, west of Foshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I drove up the dirt powerline road toward Foshay Pass from Kelbaker Road. We found two tortoises about 1/4 mi. apart about 2 mi. east of Kelbaker Road at 0820 PST and about 30° C. (Species account: Desert Tortoise). Since it was so hot so early we saw only whiptails and utas in about 1 hour of hiking around the low hills of the bajada. We were looking for spiny lizards on the boulders on these shrubby hills but we didn't find any. On our way back to Kelbaker Road we cought a large coachwhip that didn't flee as we drove past it and stopped to catch it (Species account: Coachwhip). On Kelbaker Road near the propo powerline road we caught a Leopard Lizard on the edge of the pavement. We also saw another, smaller, tortoise in the shade of two creosote bushes near the road. When we returned to Dorner's Camp Jim Murphy's class from Long Beach City College returned from Mitchell Caverns and said that they saw ten contg.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 35 25 April Dorner's Camp and Kelbaker Road in the rain, San Bernardino co., CA. tortoises on Essex Road between Hwy 40 and the Caverns at about 0730 PST. They said a pair of these courting. At about 1700 PST a thunderstorm blew over and brought about 1 hours worth of rain to Dorner's Camp. My parents arrived for a two day visit just after the storm blew over. After dark Bruce and I took my parents out to show them how to night drive looking for snakes. We found a shovel-nosed snake on Kelbaker Road about 1 mi. north of the old Hwy 66. Then we turned around and drove back up toward Kelso. We found a long-nosed snake on the pavement at about 2030 PST, after the rain had stopped (Species account: Long-nosed Snake). Then we went back to the cabin.

.R. MOON 1987 Journal 36 26 April Mitchell Caverns, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. I took my parents to see Mitchell Caverns while they're here visiting for a couple of days. We were all amazed at the beautiful geologic features of the caverns, and I was particularly interested in hearing about the Pleistocene sloth fossils found there. Afterwards I talked to the ranger, John Kelso-Shelton, about the ringneck snake sightings in the area. He said they had been seen in the rocky area on the trail from the park headquarters to the Caverns in the fall. The elevation there is about 1300 m and there does not seem to be much surface moisture there. All in all not the type of habitat I would expect to find ringneck snakes in. Mr. Kelso-Shelton said that this spring people visiting the park had seen Rosy Boas, king- snakes, and even a Lyre snake on the trails near the office but none of those snakes had been captured for closer examination. I would expect Lyre snakes here but the accuracy of this identification is questionable since I don't know

R. MOON 1987 26 April Mitchell Caverns, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. who the observer was. When we returned to Darner's Camp we saw a spectacular lightning storm pass over the Providences. In the Granite Mountains area it rained on and off for about three hours. After dark Bruce Waggy and I drove down Kelbaker Road to the old Hwy 66 (now the National Trails Highway) and then east to Essex to look for snakes that the rain may have brought out. We found a dead leaf-nosed snake and a dead Gopher Snake of on Hwy 66 west of Essex. The thunder and lightning continued as we drove up Essex Road to the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. We saw only geckos on the road so we turned around below the campground and headed back to the Granites. We didn't find any animals on the road on the way back either.

.R. MOON 1987 Journal 37 27 April Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino co., CA. My parents left this morning after a two night visit to the Granite Mountains. Later, Bruce & I took the first warm showers since the beginning of the month. Phillipe & Cindy (Granite Mountains UC reserve managers) let us use their warm water while they were away for the day. I also talked to Dave Van Clove, of the San Diego office of the Department of Parks and Recreation, over the phone about my application for a permit to collect reptile specimens from the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. After much trouble with Jim Davis at the Hesperia office of the DPR I got the same bureaucratic runaround from Mr. Van Clove. Although I have explained to them the details of my project, they still want more information about my collecting of specimens. They seem set against issuing me a collecting permit, and are overly concerned that my collecting a few specimens each of Diadophis, Tantilla, and Trimorphodon will cause their extinctions. R. MOON 1987 Journal 38 27 April Granite Mountains (near Kelso) to Barstow, San Bernadino co., CA. least they haven't refused to issue me a collecting permit yet ; sooner or later I'll convince them. Then Bruce and I left for Barstow to eat pizza and buy car parts and groceries. We are staying at Owl Canyon Campground (near Fort Irwin) for the night. We drove all of the roads here looking for snakes just after dark, but we didn't find any. The thunderstorms that were south of Barstow earlier missed this area and the skies are clear and star filled now.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 39 28 April Bonanza King Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I returned from Barstow at 1000 PST. At 1400 we went to Bonanza King Canyon to check our pit-fall traps. In a trap at the base of a rock pile and a Yucca tree in the center of the mouth of the canyon we found an adult male Gilbert skink (species account: Gilbert SKINK). After checking four traps (and finding them empty) at the fork in the canyon about 1/2 mi. up from the mouth we found a large, reddish speckled rattlesnake abroad in the canyon just below the fork. We caught the snake after a half hour of carefully coaxing it out of the shrubs it took cover in (species account: Speckled Rattlesnake). Then we went to Silver King Mine to look around. We found some old metal barrels, some petrified wood like rocks in limestone, and plenty of rabbits. To the northeast it was cloudy and raining but in our area there were no clouds. cont'd.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 40 28 April Bonanza King - Silver King mine area, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. On our way down from Silver King Mine we found a small adult Kingsnake on Blair Bro's Ranch Road at 1645 PST (Species account: Common Kingsnake). Drove back to the Granites via the old Hwy 66, and drove toward Kelso on Kelbaker Road to look for snakes. After dark we found two juveniles and a dead adult glossy snake and a Night Snake (Species accounts: Glossy Snake; Night Snake). We also drove Kelso-Cima Road for a few miles, but we didn't find anything so we went back to Dorne's Camp for the night.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 42 30 April Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino Co., CA. Stayed at the cabin most of the day while Maggie Fusari & Mike East went to see Phillippe (Granite Mtns reserve manager). Another UCSC student, Chris Cutler, stayed at the cabin to study organic chemistry. In mid afternoon Bruce Wagg and I headed for Chambless to get gasoline. On our way down Kelbaker Road we saw an Indian walking down the road dressed in a head- band, loin cloth, & mocasins. He didn't look like he needed help so we didn't stop. At the gas station a full film crew had taken over to film a movie so we couldn't buy any gas until later. So back to the Granites until the gas station opened again. On our way up Kelbaker Road, between Hwy 66 and Hwy 40 we saw two tortoises crossing the road. Then later, about 5 mi. north of Hwy 40 we saw the Indian again, this time just sitting on a rock just off the road. Didn't stop this time either. Back at Dorner's Camp, when Maggie & Mike returned, we found out that this Indian was cont'd.

R. Moon 1987 Journal 43 30 April Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino co., CA. from Orange County and had gotten his Winnebago motor home stuck in the sand nearby. Phillippe & Cindy helped pull his RV out. When we went back down to get gas (at about 1900 PSI) we found a large speckled rattlesnake and a small shovel-nosed snake on the pavement of Kelbaker Rd. near the Bristol Mountains. Later, as we drove back toward Kelso to look for snakes after dark we tho saw the indian again, but this time he & his winnebago were stuck on Kelbaker Road with a flat tire. We told the young indian man that we might be able to help him tomorrow. No snakes later so we went back to Dorner's Camp for the night.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 45 1 May Granite mountains to Tecapa, the kingston range, Nevada, and oatman, Arizona. we were lost until we saw someone driving over from the other direction who thought he was lost but he came from Hwy 15 and that's where we were going, so no problem after all. On the gravel road through the mountains we caught a speckled rattlesnake. The subspecies in this area is Crotalus mitchellii stephensi. We took Hwy 15 east and just cast of the Clark Mtns we took the road to Nipton and Nevada, picking up flat Coachwhips along the way. Then south in Nevada to the Colorado River at Davis Dam where we crossed over into Arizona. A little later, after dark, we night drove Boundary Cone Road that goes up to Oatman, Arizona. In several passes we collected three longnose snakes, a sidewinder, and a dead leaf-nosed snake. When it got too cold we ate dinner in Needles, CA and then took Hwy 40 back to the Granite mountains, Bruce and I riding in the back of Bob's truck hoping we didn't catch hypothermia. It was freezing.

R. Moon 1987 Journal 46 2 May East side of the Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bob Macey, Kellar Autumn, Bruce Wagg, and I drove over Foshay Pass from Vulcan Mine. We looked for the road to Blind Spring that the map shows, but this road doesn't seem to exist anymore. We also looked at a spring two canyons west of Blind Spring but we couldn't find any way to drive closer than the pipe- line road. So we drove up Black Canyon Road and then took Wild Horse Canyon Road to the northwest edge of Wild Horse Mesa. We drove up an old road at the south- west corner of Wild Horse Canyon. This area has some of the most dense piñon-juniper woodland I have seen in the Providence Mountains. Under a piñon pine I caught a large Gopher Snake that Kellar spotted (Species account: Gopher Snake). We looked around the area near an old water tank but we left when some other people drove up in an old pickup, driving over bushes as they went. Moon 1987 Journal 47 2 May Providence Mountains and Mid Hills, San Bernardino co., CA. over the mid hills and down the west side through the fairly dense Joshua tree wood- land there. we got to Kelso-Cima Road at about 1530 PST and we were all very tired so we headed back to the Granites to relax for the rest of the afternoon while the UCSC mammology students were out hiking in the mountains above Donners Camp. At night Bob, Kellar, & Bruce drove to Imboy and Twentynine Palms to look for snakes while I stayed at Donners camp with the recreating students from UCSC. R. MOON 1987 Journal 48 3 May Bull Canyon, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino co., CA. I led a hike with UCSC's mammology class, into Bull Canyon from Cottonwood Canyon and the old road up to Silver Peak. We were supposed to open two sites of pitfall traps at two springs in the canyon. On the old dirt road to Silver Peak, in cottonwood Canyon, we saw several Desert Marigolds growing singly and in clusters in the soily and rocky areas on the way up to the base of the steep hills. We also saw a Desert Spring Lizard where the trail to the saddle on the ridge begins. Up on the ridge we saw a Panamint Chipmunk on a piñon pine among the granite boulder peaks. We all trail blazed down into the canyon and made our way to a spring in the upper canyon that we call Columbine spring (since there are columbine plants there). I opened 14 traps at the spring while everyone else ate lunch in the shade of the pines. By the time we finished there it was getting near the time we said we'd be cont'd.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 49 3 may Bull Canyon, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino co., CA. back to Cottonwood Canyon so we headed back up the canyon. We never made it to the second trap site down the canyon further. There is no trail in Bull Canyon so we bouldered our way up the north most fork at the head of the canyon. On our way up we found a collared lizard on a boulder on the sunny, north side of the canyon. It took us just over 1 1/2 hours to go over the saddle above Bull Canyon and back down into Cottonwood Canyon. After Dark Brian Norton, Bruce Waggy, and I drove to Chambless on the old Hwy 66. On Kelbaker Road north of Hwy 40 we saw a sidewinder, a Mojave Rattlesnake, and a kit Fox on the road; the kit Fox ran away as we approached (Species account: Kit Fox). South of Hwy 40, near the Bristol Mountains we saw a shore-nosed snake and a speckled rattlesnake On the pavement. We also saw a scorpion on the road after returning from Chambless (where we used the telephone). Then back to the Granites.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 50 4 May Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. Maggie's UCSC mammology class left this morning for Santa Cruz. It's strange that all my friends have to go to class while I stay here, hike around, and watch the animals. I'm getting course credit for this too-- it's really a good deal. Mid morning Bruce and I headed out for Barstow, pizza, and groceries, but we got a little side tracked for a while on Kelbaker Road. We stopped at the granite outcroppings 2.2 mi. north of Hwy 40 to find some Desert Spiny Lizards. It was about 0930 PST and approx 30°c or a little warmer. Between the boulders on both sides of the road we collected six spiny lizards: two adults, one ♂ one ♀; two juveniles, both ♂'s; two subadults, or small adults depending on at what size they usually mature. Bruce is doing that diet study on the Desert Spiny Lizard so we're trying to get a range of ages between spring, summer, and fall. On our way out we found a dead Kingsnake hatchling from last fall; it had been cont'd.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 51 4 May Barstow to the Granite Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. run over by a car. I would not have expected to find kingsnakes in that desert habitat- sandy, Creosote- scrub without any rocky areas nearby (species account: Common Kingsnake). Then we left for Barstow. We bought car parts, pizza for dinner, and groceries. We left just before sunset so we could drive Hwy 66 past Pisgah lava flow and look for snakes. Didn't find any but saw a dozen or so geckos on the pavement- they seem to be common on every road at night except for Kelbaker Road, probably because of the flood control ditches and dikes that parallel the pavement. Southwest of Amboy Crater we saw target practice shooting down at the military base. They were shooting automatic weapons, tracer flares, and some kind of small explosives. It was a good light show even though I don't like the idea of practicing war. Then we headed for the Granites via Amboy and Kelbaker Road.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 52 5 May Blind Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. Bruce and I hiked toward Blind Spring from the dirt pipeline road at Vulcan Mine. We headed east on the pipeline road until we got to Foshay- Spring. From there we went north and east up the ridges between the washes toward Blind Spring; however, because we had forgotten the map we didn't know where the spring was. We never did find Blind Spring but we found out later that it was only one wash over (east) from where we hiked. We headed up the canyon that goes nearly all the way Fountain Peak and is two canyons west of Blind Spring on the map. On our way up the ridges and washes we trail blazed through some of the most dense, thorny vegetation I have seen so far. The most abundant plants there were chollas, catclaws, some impassable prickly pear outcrops, and short grasses with lots of stickers. Also Yuccas and some Creosote bushes. R. MOON 1987 Journal 53 5 May Two canyons west of Blind Spring, Providence mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. narrowed into a steep sided, rocky canyon, still with very dense vegetation. In this part of the canyon Desert Almond* became another shrub in the dense, shrubby jungle. There were also a few Pinar pines on the steep canyon walls. We didn't really know where we were going but our goal was to find a spring at the narrow bend in the reddish rocky canyon. We found one. Just above a small cliff in the canyon we found very dense willows, catclaws, mormon tea, and a few young cottonwood trees at the north end of the spring. There was no surface water there but there must be ground moisture or seasonal flow to support such a dense oasis. On a rocky hillside above the willows I found a large (n 1m-1'1/2m) Speckled rattlesnake that was greyish, speckled, and had approx. a 10 segment rattle (Species account: Speckled Rattlesnake). 2. MOON 1987 Journal 54 5 May Two canyons west of Blind Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. twelve pitfall traps and two shovels. We put in three traps below the spring in the rocky, shrubby canyon but it started to get late so we left the other traps to put in on another trip. It was sunny and hot on our hike up but had gotten shady in the canyon in the late afternoon. We did the digging in the shade and cooler temps but we had to leave at about 1730 PST in order to make it back over Foshay Pass and to our car before it got too dark.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 55 6 May Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA elev. ~+1420m. Bruce and I drove to Vulcan Mine to hike up and check our 10 pitfall traps in the Goldstone spring area. I hiked up to the spring from the pipeline road while Bruce drove back down to the mine tailings area to look for spiny lizards. When I began the hike up it was 1300 PST, sunny, and ~30°C. As I went up the road to the spring it got very cloudy from the east and there was lightning and thunder over the mountains north of Foshay Pass. It stayed 25-50% cloudy for the rest of the day while we were out. I found several lizards in five traps near Goldstone Spring; two adult skinks and a dried up toad in three traps near a desert almond bush below the spring, and two adult spiny lizards (one male, one female) in one trap under a large desert almond shrub above the spring where there was no surface moisture (Species accounts: Gilbert Skink; Red Spotted Toad; Desert Spiny cont'd

.R. MOON Journal 56 6 may Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. elev. ~1500m. lizard). I also checked five traps that were at another spring about '1/4 southeast of Goldstone Spring in a rocky canyon below burned out hillsides. In two traps along a small flowing stream in a sandy part of the wash I found a fence lizard and three skinks (one male, one female, one dead). In the puddles where the spring is I found two toads in amplexus; they took cover under the edge of a rock as I watched them. In two more traps above the spring I found only several beetles without lizard company. I hiked back down to the pipeline road where Bruce was waiting - he didn't find any spring lizards, only utahs. B.R. Moon 1987 Journal 57 7 May Granite Mountains to Santa Cruz, CA. Bruce Wagg and I left for Santa Cruz this morning at 0730 PST. We stopped at Granite Cave to drop some things off to Phillippe and then we hit the road. On Kelbaker Road, at the end of the pavement near the highway, we found a large Mojave Rattlesnake on the pavement (Species account: Mojave Rattlesnake). It was mostly cloudy over the desert but we didn't get any rain on the way out. When we got to Bakersfield it got hot- no clouds over the valley. We took Hwy 5 up to 152 and then over to Watsonville where it was foggy. We arrived in Santa Cruz (on campus) at 1600 PST. The trip took us 8 1/2 hours (-45 min for breakfast) at a speed of about 15 mph past legal.

B.R. MOON 1987 Journal 58 8 May UCSC, Santa Cruz, CA. I spent the day visiting friends and looking up articles that could help me with any papers I might write about my study and my results. Not a very eventful day but very relaxing - and warm showers are nice too. My friends Weylan Wang, Tracy Wade, Kathryn Barry, and I went out for Chinese food and spent the rest of the night just hanging out. 9 May End party day (actually Day on the Quad day) at Porter College, so by noon many people have already started with the recreational beverages. Bands played outside, and there were water wars and food stands. I visited Greg Baker, Emily Campbell, and Pili Goddard and we all had a few drinks, rode Greg's mountain bike around, and listened to the bands. This went on for the entire afternoon. At night I went to a party at Eric Malone's house and saw even more of my UCSC friends. More drinks and later some pizza then I went back to my old house where I stayed overnight.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 5/9 10 May Still at UCSC, Santa Cruz, CA. Today's Mothers Day so I came home to my parent's house after spending the morning in Santa Cruz. So my parents in Saratoga thought I was 500 miles away in the east Mojave; they were a little surprised to see me. I spent the night just watching T.V. and reading some of my old books. 11 May Monday morning and back to UCSC for business. Another one of those strange days where all my friends are in class and I don't have anything important to do. I picked up a lizard stomach pump from what's left of EFP. I didn't even there was such a thing as a lizard stomach pump but since there is we can use it to check lizard diets without cutting 'em open. I talked to more people that I haven't seen in a while. I had dinner with one of my best friends. She supplied the spaghetti fixins and I cooked 'em. Late night I met a girl who was interested in my desert project so we stayed up and talked till very late. So not enough sleep for the return drive, oh well.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 60 12 May Santa Cruz to the Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I left Santa Cruz at 0900 PST and headed for the desert. Along the coast it was foggy but inland a few miles it became sunny and stayed that way (and hot too) until we reached Mojave. From there accross the desert it was dark and nearly 100% overcast. It rained on and off, with high winds, until we reached Barstow where it rained hard constantly. On Hwy 58 a few miles west of First st. There was a flash flood that washed out a segment of the road and flooded several areas. East of Barstow it stopped raining and we could see a few spots of blue sky between the clouds. We arrived at Dorner's at about 1830 PST. It was overcast and windy but no rain. It was warm too, but I didn't take the air temp. Now we're tired. Good night.

Q. Moon 1987 Journal 61 13 May Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I have been at Dorner's camp so far today. I've been catching up on some writing and Bruce has been all of last weekend's newspapers. He also worked on the transmission in his car; it needed a new pan gasket. While working on the motor he found a woodrat that had taken up residence there for a while. This morning a man from National Geographic came over to ask us about where he might find some Chuckwallas, snakes, or Kit Foxes to photograph. We talked to him for about half an hour about the animals he was looking for and about his photographing techniques. Outside it was sunny during the morning with occassional breezes until midday. Then clouds blew over from the east and brought some lightning and thunder which lasted for about an hour. Now its 1600 PST and sunny, ~30°c, and about 50% cloud cover. Bruce just got his car started. Did nothing exciting for the rest of the night.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 62 14 May Foshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I drove over the pass at 1300 PST in my car (Honda). We drove from Vulcan Mine Road to the pipeline road, over the first low hill, and then up the road toward Goldstone Spring. About half way between the pipeline road and the transmission line road we turned east onto a road that goes around the steep hill in the pipeline road and reconnects with the pipeline road on the east side of the hill. This was actually quite an achievement considering that we drove a Honda accord over the four wheel drive roads. From here we drove out to Essex Road and up toward Bonanza King Mine. On our way up Blair Bro's Ranch road we found a large Gopher Snake basking in the intermittent sun on the dirt road (Species account: Gopher Snake). The snake seemed indifferent about being approached and picked up. When we arrived at Bonanza King Mine we hiked up into the canyon from the old town remnants just above the mine. We contd.

2. MOON 1987 Journal 63 14 may Bonanza king canyon, Providence mountains, san Bernadine co., cA. checked three pitfall traps near the mouth of the canyon; we found three Night lizards and some spiders (Species desert accounts: Night Lizard). Next, we hiked up to the fork in the canyon and checked four traps near the mouth of the south fork. No reptiles, but we did get a shrew that had fallen into the pitfall trap and died. This shrew is probably Notiosorex crawfordi, for which the only other records I know of come from the Granite Mountains in 1979 (Species account: Gray Shrew). We continued up the south fork of the canyon intending to collect some fossils from the upper canyon. About 1/4 mi. from the fork in the main canyon, and above a steep silty and rocky cliff, I saw a small striped whipsnake which (~1-1 1/4 m.) which escaped into a large, dense stand of Desert Almond. This area, and our pitfall traps just below, are at the approximate lower limit of Piñon pines in this canyon. (Species account: cont'd.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 64 14 may Bonanza King Canyon, Providence mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Striped Whipsnake). Further up the narrow, rocky and brushy canyon we climbed the northwest hillside and searched through the rocky jumbles for brachiopod fossils. The hillside is in the Pinon-Juniper woodland and has limestone outcroppings from which many fossil containing pieces have broken off. We collected these fossils for about one hour until 1700 PST, when we headed back down. On our way back down Blair Bro's Ranch road we found two large reddish Speckled rattlesnakes crossing the dirt road less then 1/4 mi. apart from each other (Species account: Speckled Rattlesnake). Further down the road we found a juvenile Mojave Rattlesnake on the road in the sun that shone through the overcast sky at 1800 PST, (Species account: Mojave Rattlesnake). R. MOON 1987 Journal 65 14 may Kelbaker Road from Hwy 40 to Kelso, San Bernardino co., CA. Shovel-nosed snake. We also collected a small dead sidewinder that had been hit by a car. This is the second night of the full moon but it is completely overcast and the moon didn't rise until until 2030 PST which may be why we found so many snakes in the early evening. On Kelbaker Road between Hwy 40 and Kelso we found two long-nosed snakes, one on a dirt part of the road near the highway and the other on the pavement near the substation (species account: Long-Nosed snake). We also drove part way up Vulcan Mine Road and on the way back down found a kingsnake crossing the pavement (species account: Common Kingsnake ). Then we went home to Dorner's Camp for the night. * We also found a dead long-tailed Brush Lizard on Kelbaker Road north of Vulcan Mine Road (species account: Long-tailed Brush Lizard).

R. MOON 1987 Journal 66 15 may Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Stayed in this morning due to storm front. Outside it has been raining almost constantly for about 4 hours (since 0730 PST). It's also raining throughout the Kelso valley and over the Providence Mountains; this appears to be a large storm front rather than localized thunder showers. The air temp. now (1130 PST) is 17°C. Nick Waser and Mary Price arrived last night; they went out with Phillippe this morning to look at the burn area on the ridge north of Dorner's Camp. They're very friendly people and I think they're going to stay for about a week to look at the burn area and work on setting up some permanent transects to study plant regression. 2. MOON 1987 Journal 67 15 May Kelbaker Road between Hwy 66 and Hwy 40, San Bernardino Co., CA. black volcanic rocks and Bruce saw five of them. The chuckwallas seem more abundant here than in the surrounding mountains and the Granite and Providence Mountains (Species account: Chuckwalla). We also drove up to the southwest edge of the Marble Mountains to see where a common trilobite collecting site is. We didn't find any fossils but we saw the light colored shale where they can be found; its a wide, steep canyon at the end of a dirt road directly north of Chambless. then we stopped for gasoline and ice cream before heading back to the Granites. on Kelbaker Road just north of Hwy 66 we found an adult female Patch-nosed snake on the edge of the pavement (Species account: Western Patch-nosed Snake). R. Moon 1987 Journal 68 15 May Kelbaker Road and Vulcan Mine Road, Providence mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Road from 1930 to 2130 PST looking for snakes. On Vulcan Mine Road we found an adult Long-Nosed Snake stt lying on the pavement (species account: Long-Nosed Snake). I also saw a Banded Gecko on the pavement where the lowest mountain ridge extends out to the road (species account: Banded Gecko). Found no other animals on road between Kelso and Vulcan Mine Road except Kangaroo Rats and Black Tailed Jackrabbits so we went home.

2. MOON 1987 Journal 69 16 May Quail Spring Basin, Providence mountains San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I drove through Quail Spring Basin this afternoon to see what Quail Spring looked like. On the dirt road about 1 mi. southeast from the Arrowweed spring road we saw a Bobcat run out from the creosote bushes on the south side of the road and run up the granite boulder hillside to hide behind a large boulder (Species account: Bobcat). When the Bobcat went behind the boulder a large Chuckwella ran over the top of the boulder from behind it and down the south face into a crevice (Species account: Chuckwlla). We continued east into the basin until we got to the southeastern most granite ridge on the north side of the road. we stopped there to try to catch some Spring Lizards on the boulders. Altogether we saw three of them which we captured for Bruce's diet study on them (Species account: Desert Spiny Lizard). cont'd.

2. Moon 1987 Journal 70 16 May Quail Spring Basin, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. We drove to where the road enters the sandy wash south of Quail Spring. From there I hiked over the low, Creosote-Yucca hills toward the spring. Bruce looked all around the rocky hillside south of the road for lizards. At the spring I found a dry metal trough with some rabbit bones in it. Just passed this there was a dead bull in the narrow, sandy wash. There was a depression in the wash with water in it and a lot of bees around it. Further up the canyon, about 1/8 mi. or less, I found a small cave with some water in it and a wooden frame at the entrance like in a mine shaft. After looking around for a little while I headed back to the car to head home. It was still sunny with a few high clouds and an occasional breeze, as it had been all afternoon, when we left. on our way down Kelbaker Road we found an adult Gopher snake on the pavement (species accounts Gopher Snake). Then home to play darts & rest.

MOON 187 Journal 71 17 May southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. This morning I drove to the pipeline road above Vulcan Mine with the intention to hike up to the high peaks southeast of Goldstone Spring. I started hiking, from the pipeline road, at 0815 PST. First, I checked our ten pitfall traps in the area of Goldstone Spring. In one trap just below the desert almond bushes at the spring I found two live frogs and one dead, dried up toad (species account: Red-Spotted Toad). Just down the wash under an oak like bush I found two skinks, one adult male and one juvenile (probably male). In another trap at a spring a few hundred meters up the canyon southeast of Goldstone Spring I found two more adult male skinks (species account: Gilbert Skink). Another trap, in the sandy wash near the puddle of a spring I found another toad trying to burrow into the soil in the bottom of the bucket. 2. MOON 487 Journal 72 17 May southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. From the springs I followed some cow trails up the ridge on the [illegible] west side of the canyon southeast of Goldstone Spring. The trails switch backed up the soily and rocky hillside. This used to be Pion-Juniper woodland until it burned several years ago; now the only vegetation consists of bunch like grasses, introduced grasses, and the various types and colors of small annual flowers. Standing and fallen dead pi?on pines and junipers dot the hillside with a few rocky points here and there too. On the hillside just below 1600 m. I saw a collared lizard run away from a rockpile as I approached (Species account: collared Lizard). When I reached one of the peaks at 1704 m. I saw two fence lizards while I rested; they were on different outcrops of granite around the main peak (Species account: Western Fence Lizard). And in the rocks on the north side of the peaks I found a large (approx 1 1/2 m.) Gopher snake which cont'd.

MOON 1987 Journal 73 17 May southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. hissed at me and tried to crawl under a rock as I caught it (Species account: Gopher Snake). Up on top of the granite peak I was mobbed by a mass of small annoying flies that must have been in the rocks waiting for me. I still held the snake in my hand while I decided what to do with it -- I took a photo and let it go. I continued up the once wooded and burned ridge to the southeast toward the north-south running ridge in sec 5 of T9N R14E. I checked each rockpile and turned some fallen piñon trees looking for more critters. I found a few more fence lizards on rocky peaks and on a fallen pine; I have also seen side-blotched lizards just about everywhere except on the fence lizard occupied rockpiles. Where the fence lizards are common the Uta's (side blotched lizards) seem to occupy the smaller rocks or line on the ground near shrubs (Species account: Side-Blotched Lizard). cont'd.

2. moon 1987 Journal 74 17 May southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Once I reached the center of the ridge I zig zagged my way up (south) toward the main peak at 1842 m. climbing each smaller rocky peak and looking for lizards and woodrat nests and skulls in the rock- piles. These woodrats, which build nests out of pine twigs and bark just may be Dusky Footed Woodrats (Neotoma fuscipes). I found part of one skull with some molars for someone at the MVZ to look at. This ridge is a wide, relatively flat topped ridge that is still within the burned area so that all but a few pines or junipers are dead. There are several different kinds of small (up to 1m. high) shrubs and some short grasses, that are probably introduced species brought by cattle, growing on the rocky ridge with sparse rock piles and small peaks. It is sunny, warm (~27oc), and occasionally windy up here; altogether perfect hiking weather. on nearly every rock outcrop I found one or a few fence lizards, and many cont'd.

2. MOON 1987 Journal 75 17 May southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Utas on the shrubby ground of the ridge. From some peaks I could see Winston Basin and it wooded hills and washes and from others I could see down the east side of the mountains into the steep canyons and broad washes at the canyon mouths. From almost anywhere on the ridge I can see both east and west to the horizon behind the mountain studded desert. North are the high peaks of the northern Providence mountains and south are the high peaks around Providence peak. After reaching the peak at 1842 m. and resting for a while I headed north back down the ridge. Instead of taking the west ridge, I went north and then west down into the canyon southeast of Goldstone Spring. Up on the ridge before I headed down into the canyon, I saw another Collared Lizard run from a rockpile to under a larger rock nearby (species account: collared lizard). The canyon I went down was wide at the top with steep hilly sides but at the cont'd.

24 I am not sure what I am doing here. I am not sure if I am doing this right. But the author has done it before and she did a good job. She made all kinds of things that I really need. Imagine your life was written all in one thing, anyone could read it and make sense out of it. That's how it should be. The more people who can understand what you are doing, the better off you are. That makes me think about my own life. And then I start to feel like I am not living well. Like maybe I am not really living at all. But in fact, if you look at your life closely, you will see that you have been doing just fine. You have made a lot of progress. And you are making more now than ever before. So why don't you keep going? Don't let anyone else tell you that you aren't good enough. Keep pushing and you will get there. Remember, when I say "good enough," I mean something different than what most people think. (Good enough means being satisfied.) I do not want to show how much better I am than all the rest of them.

17 May Southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernadino Co., CA. Middle it became narrow with steep, rocky sides and somilimes vertical cliffs. Then down past the upper spring and past Goldstone Spring all the way back to my car at the pipeline road. It's much hotter down near Vulcan Mine than it was up on the high ridges. 1500 PST; the entire hike from the pipeline road up to the peaks and back down to the road took just under seven hours. Then back to the Granites where Bruce had stayed for most of the day because he didn't want to do a hard hike (too lazy). I looked up what Bighorn sheep pellets looked like and verified that I had seen several piles of sheep pellets on the high ridge in sec 5 of T9N R14E.

18 May Dorner's Camp, Granite mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Stayed around Dorner's cabin for most of the day. We've been here almost two months and Bruce and I are getting tired of the isolation. We're not too thrilled about each other's company either; I've been doing a lot of the hard hikes and hard work myself because he's too lazy and doesn't want to have to hike to new places to see them. He's also much too careless about capturing rattlesnakes. He also wants to collect and kill every specimen he finds. Recently he killed a large speckled rattlesnake just to skin it so he could take the skin home. He also stole a U.S. Geologic Survey marker just to add to his collection of personal junk. That really upset me so I'm going to find out what I can do about it so he becomes discouraged about doing similar things in the future. Bruce gets upset with me because I often don't want to night drive and look

MOON 1987 Journal 78 18 May Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. for snakes every night. We're using my car and my grant money for travel expenses and he gets mad at me when I don't drive him around when# he wants to go somewhere! Altogether, we can't continue to work together much longer without getting into serious arguments. I would much rather see him leave than force me to create further problems by arguing or fighting. Anyway I will continue with my field work with or without him and I will not let his actions discourage me from completing my work. We continue to get along with each other but it may not take long before our cooperation ends. At night we drove over to Essex Road to look for snakes on the east side of the Providences. 18 May Essex Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. (species account) We found a long-nosed snake on the pavement at about 1930 PST. We drove up to the campground at Mitchell caverns before heading back down toward the Highway. We also drove the paved part of Black Canyon Road; we found an adult glossy snake just north of Essex Road (species account: Glossy Snake). Later, we drove to Essex to drop some mail at the post office; we found two more glossy snakes on the pavement. We did not collect these two snakes. Then home via Hwy 40. On Kelbaker Road I saw two more adult glossy snakes; one on pavement, one on the dirt portion of the road (species account: Glossy Snake) we did not collect these snakes either; we looked at them and released them; then went home to sleep.

19 May Granite Mountains to Barstow and back, Sun Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I went to Barstow for excitement. I wonder what's becoming of my social life when I think Barstow could be exciting. We did the usual routine: buy camera film at the mall, tacky postcards at the Barstow station, do laundry, eat pizza (for lunch this time) while we write the tacky postcards to send them to friends back at Santa Cruz, and buy groceries. Not as much excitement as I had hoped, but I knew that would be the case. At least I still have hope and that is somewhat comforting. Anyway, we made it back to the Granites by sunset and relaxed and read all the newspapers during the night.

20 May Springs and canyons northeast of Foshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. Left this morning at about 0800 PST heading for Foshay Pass. Bruce stayed back at Dorners camp because he didn't want to hike to Blind Spring, so I went without him. On my way down Kelbaker Road I saw a man in a railroad or highway or something maintenance truck stop to put a desert tortoise off of the roadway near the pipeline substation. I slowed down and waved and said hello since he was actually watching out for the tortoise instead of hurrying by without case. From Vulcan Mine & drone to the pipeline road and then over around the first steep hill and over Foshay Pass. I stopped at the four wheel drive road east of Foshay Spring and followed the road or fast up to the Blind Spring canyon. On the way up I went past Blind Spring before I knew it so I hiked over to the second canyon west of Blind Spring and then went contd.

2. MOON 1987 Journal 82 20 May Two canyons west of Blind Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernadino co., CA. up to the spring at the first sharp bend in the narrow, red rock canyon. Just below the bend in the canyon, in the rocky, dense mixed mountain scrub (prickly pear, cholla, catclaw, Yucca, Desert almond, etc.) I saw a large speckled rattlesnake sunning in the wash bottom (Species account: Speckled Rattlesnake). A little further up the rocky & brushy canyon I saw a large striped Whipsnake as it took cover in a rockpile below a Yucca and some catclaw bushes (Species accounts: Striped Whipsnake). Then up to check three pitfall traps that I have in the narrow, rocky canyon below the spring. In two traps I caught a Gilbert Skink and a Desert Night Lizard (Species accounts: Gilbert Skink; Desert Night Lizard). When I put in these traps I had left some buckets to put in later so now I carried three of them up the steep, rocky cliffs to the spring. I found only one place to put in these traps since in the rest of the spring area either cont'd.

R. Moon 1987 Journal 83 20 May Two canyons west of Blind Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. the vegetation was too dense to get down to the wash bottom or the accessible sites were much to rocky to put in any pitfall traps. The sight I chose was just above the upper willows in a somewhat grassy and shrubby clearing between the willows and some oak like bushes (which may actually be oakes, I'm not sure). Digging the holes for the traps was fairly easy since the soil was soft and with few rocks and it was a sunny and breezy but mild day. when I was finished I headed back down toward Blind Spring to look closer at it on the way back down to the road to my car. There didn't seem to be a real spring or any surface moisture but there was a large clump of 2m. high mesquite trees indicating subsurface moisture and possibly seasonal surface water. Nothing else too exciting in the otherwise shrubby, open, and soily & rocky canyon. on my way east on the pipeline road contl.

2.MOON 1987 Journal 84 20 May East side of Fashay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. I got a flat tire due to a rock making a cut in the inside sidewall of my rear tire. So I put on the spare and then went up to Mitchell Caverns to talk to the ranger John Kelso-Shelton. He let me look through some of the old notes on the snake species previous rangers had found in the area; I found some interesting notes on Black-headed snakes, Ringneck snakes, and Patch-nosed snakes. John also showed me some old photographs of the town of Providence at Bonanza King Mine during the 1950's. I saw a photo of the house that once stood on a foundation which Bruce and I had camped on. All that's left of that house now is a cement platform, and old stone shed with a tin roof, and piles of core samples. Supposedly, the town of Providence was one of the wildest towns in the area. It's pretty quiet there now. I headed back to the Granites via Hwy 40 and arrived to find that Claudia Luke, Harry Greene and several other people had cont'd.

2 Moon 1987 Journal 85 20 May Dorner's Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. arrived at Dorners Camp. They told me that they had been hiking around at Vulcan Mine in the Providences and that Harry had found a Gopher Snake and a Night Lizard here. At night Harry and some friends went out driving and looking for snakes while the rest of the group stayed at Dorners. Claudia and Dave and I sat around and sang songs while Claudia and Dave played guitars. When Harry Greene and friends returned they showed us some Banded Geckos they had caught and soon after everyone went to sleep.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 86 21 May Hole in the Wall campground, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Everyone woke up this morning and went through the usual group breakfast proceedings while outside it has been sunny, breezy, and cool. Afterwards, Harry Greene, Claudia Luke, several of their friends & colleagues from UCB, Bruce Waggy, and I piled in to two cars and headed for hole in the wall campground. on Kelbaker road we stopped twice before Kelso; once for a Leopard Lizard (with red spots for the breeding season) on the edge of the road, and once for a Desert Tortoise photography session (where everyone lays down on the side of the road, surrounding the tortoise, and puts & camera up to its face from each direction) (species accounts: Leopard Lizard; Desert Tortoise). Then we rounded Kelso heading for Cedar Canyon. About 1/2 way between Kelso and Cedar Canyon we stopped for another tortoise, but this time we took fewer photos. Instead, we broke out cont'd.

R. Moon 1987 Journal 87 21 may on the way to Hole in the Wall, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. the hulla hoops (thats Hula hoops) and had a hooping contest on the side of the road. It seemed that Claudia won, and I only wondered how small children could do this with their little bodies and such big hoops. Anyway, we did finally make it over Cedar Canyon Road and down onto Black Canyon Road. While passing through the sagebrush plains east of Mid Hills we found a large Gopher Snake on the dirt road. We were only distracted by the snake for a short while still on our way to Hole in the Wall (We weren't really in a hurry and we didn't even know what we were going to do there, but thats where we were headed). Once we arrived at the campground we saw a large Chuckwalla on a rock near a picnic table. This was surprising because the habitat is desert scrub with some junipers and sagebrush, but no creosote (Species account: chuckwalla). cont'd.

R. MOON 1981 Journal 88 21 May Hole in the Wall campground, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. I hiked down into the canyon below the hole and below the lookout; in one of the small cave-like holes I found three Barn owls roosting together (this time I took some photos) (Species account: Barn owl). I also found a skink and a Fence lizard in that little canyon (Species accounts: Gilbert Skink; Western Fence Lizard). We also drove around into Wild Horse canyon and hiked around on the west side of Hole in the wall. We found several areas with owl pellets where the owls roost on the volcanic rock cliffs. Most of the rodents (skulls) that we found there were from woodrats and kangaroo rats; very few or no Peromyscus species. Harry Greene caught a juvenile chuckwalla on the lone butte on the east side of Hole in the wall (Species account: Chuckwalla). This area was volcanic rocky with desert scrub; no creosote for the chuckwallas here either. Afterward, we all went home (to the Granites) to set around a campfire and checked rodent traps.

2. MOON 1987 Journal 89 22 May Kelso Dunes, San Bernardino co., CA. Harry Greene, Claudia Luke, their friends, and I visited the dunes today. Harry and two of his guests looked around the creosote plains below the dunes for Desert Iguanas and Horned Lizards. They left for L.A. and Berkeley at 1030 PST. The rest of us, Claudia, Pam, Dave, Ian, Laura, Kent, and I, looked all around the lower dunes for sand lizards; we saw several and caught (and released) four small lizards (species account: Fringe-Toed Lizard). We meandered our way up to the willows on the south side of the high dunes. The willows were in bloom and there were several hummingbirds constantly flying from flower to flower; there were no distinct males so we couldn't identify them. Once at the top of the dunes, we rested for a while and then all slid down on our bottoms while the dunes began to hum beneath and behind us. However, when cont'd.

22 May Kelso Dunes, San Bernardino Co., CA. we stopped where grass began to grow the humming also stopped. So Dave went up another nearby dune slope and slid down alone; this time the sand really began to hum and the sliding sand continued humming for about 20 seconds. The rest of us did this dune and we had the same effect- the sand hummed for about 10 seconds after we stopped sliding. when we finished sliding I was thoroughly covered with left over sand, both inside and outside my clothes- even in my ears. we arrived back at Dorners Camp we (Claudia, Dave, & I) went for a swim in our wonderful (but small) cement pond. At night the UCB people set up mist nets to catch some bats. At about 2100 PST we had caught three pipistrelles and five Big Brown Bats, all of which we examined and released (Species accounts: Western Pipistrelle; Big Brown Bat). Now I'm tired so good night.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 9/1 23 may Dorners Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Our UCB guests hiked toward cottonwood cave after breakfast this morning. I stayed at Dorners camp (so did Bruce) and worked on my bicycle. After I fixed the flat tire and adjusted my tires & brakes I rode around the ridge and into cottonwood canyon. I was looking for the UCB expedition but I didn't find them. So I rode to Cottonwood Spring and ate lunch before riding back to the cabin under the hot desert sun. At night Bob Macey arrived (19/5 PST) to stay for a week. Bob, Bruce, and I went out driving to look for snakes. We found only a gecko and a sidewinder near Amboy before returning to the Granites.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 92 24 May Dorners Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bob, Bruce, and I worked on a turtle trap that Bob wants to use to catch a turtle in one pond along the Mojave River. Claudia, Pam, Ian, & Dave left today on their ways back to work at Pisgah Crater (Claudia) and UCB (the others). Early this afternoon Bob, Bruce, and I drove out to Arizona to find some snakes at night. We drove up to Oatman, Arizona and we hiked around the summit a few miles above Oatman. While hiking around before sunset I got several spines from the jumping chollas in my shoes. That was not a comfortable experience. Anyway, at night we found a long-nosed snake on Boundary Cone Road. We made several passes on the road and found no other snakes - only traffic. So we headed back to the Granites when it got too cold for the snakes. Arrived back here at Dorners camp at about 2230 PST.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 93 25 May Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bob Macey, Bruce Waggs and I went to Goldstone Spring to check my pitfall traps there. The weather was cool on our way up the canyon early this afternoon. In two traps at Goldstone Spring I got one skink and an spiny lizard (Species accounts: Gilbert Skink; Desert Spiny Lizard). In the traps at the spring just southeast of Goldstone Spring Bruce found two more skinks (species accounts: Gilbert Skink). After this we drove to Searchlight, Nevada. on Nipton Road (Hwy164) we found a dead long-nosed Snake that corresponded to the old description of Rhinocheilus lecontei clarus in the Joshua tree woodland just east of the Nevada CA- border. From Searchlight, Nevada we drove to cottonwood Cove at one of the lakes on the Colorado River. Before sunset we hiked around the mountain about 5 miles west of the cove. We also searched the sandy wash south of these mountains and of the road. We saw a few Zebra-Tailed lizards and I found a dead contd.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 94 25 May Cottonwood Cove area, Clark County, Nevada. Sidewinder that was half buried in the sand. flesh It had been eaten to the back bone for part of its length below its head. Then, after sunset, we made several passes along the road a few miles west of the cove. We found a long-nosed snake that appears to be (by the old description) Rhinocheilus lecontei clarus (species account: Long-Nosed Snake). On our way home, after it had gotten quite cold we found a glossy snake on the road just east of Searchlight. We did not see any other animals on the road all the way from Searchlight to Mipton to Cima to the Granite Mountains.

MOON 1987 Journal 95 26 May Grapevine Canyon, San Bernardino Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. looked for alligator lizards with Bob Macey & Bruce Waggy in the Grapevines just above the mouth of Grapevine Canyon. We put in several paint can pitfall traps to try to catch these lizards. Apparently the habitat preference of these lizards is similar to that of the Paramint Alligator Lizard - they live in grape- vines along stream courses in the lower parts desert canyons. This area is somewhat rocky, hilly scrub desert with grapevines, desert almond bushes, and some yuccas along the canyon bottom. We didn't find any alligator lizards, but we did find two striped looking fence lizards. I also saw several whiptails in the more open areas around the grapevines. We left in the late afternoon to have dinner somewhere and night drive Amboy Road after dark. Just before sunset we stopped at the summit of Amboy Road in the Bullion Mountains. Sheep Hole Mountains. R. MOON 1987 Journal 96 26 May Sheep Hole Mountains on the east side of Amboy Road, San Bernardino co., CA. on the east side of the road. Bob found a juvenile chuckwalla under a small rock just above the wash bottom. Just after sunset, when it started getting dark, we came back down the canyon and drove a couple of passes between the road summit and the valley south of the mountains. We found two sidewinders on the pavement near the summit over the Sheep Hole Mountains. Then back home via (Granite Mtns) Amboy and Kelbaker Road.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 97 27 May After Canyon, San Bernardino co., CA. Once again Bob, Bruce and I went on a half day expedition from the Granites to After Canyon on the Mojave River. Our goal was to set a turtle trap to catch some of the pond turtles in a small pond near the river. While Bob & Bruce set the trap I caught some bullfrogs in some different puddles near the river just east of the turtle pond. Then we walked upstream (west) and looked at the destruction of the oasis cased by cattle grazing and off road vehicles. We saw very many small toads and tree frogs in the short grass along a chain of small ponds in a side channel of the river. Our next stop was the Desert Studies Center at Soda Lake. We just wanted to see what the consortium was like. We looked around the classroom & lab facilities (which were in the works). We also walked along the edge of the lake bed and looked at the springs where we thought there might be some tree frogs. We didn't see any. Cont'd.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 98 27 May Baker and Salt Creek north of Baker, San Bernadino co., CA. After Soda Lake we went to Baker for food before heading north to night drive to look for snakes. We stopped at Salt Creek and looked around there. At the north end of the creek, where the water stops flowing, we saw tire tracks where a truck had driven right up the creek bed, digging up the soil and smashing much of the streamside vegetation. Then we drove up to the Amargosa river valley and stopped to photograph the sunset. We also stopped along the road somewhere where we saw a rocky hill that we hiked around on unt.i dark. On our way back to the truck at the road Bob almost stepped on a sidewinder that was stretched out across a small wash. We drove back toward Baker after dark and found only a leaf nosed snake that had been run over by a semi truck that passed us heading the other direction. On our way we couldn't find Salt Creek again in the dark so we headed back to the Granites and Dorner's camp.

R MOON 1987 Journal 99 28 may Dorners Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. I stayed at Dorners Camp today while Bob & Bruce drove back up to Afton Canyon to check and remove the turtle trap. I spent the day packing up most of my things and cleaning up the cabin. Around sunset I went to Granite cave (rangers house) to see Philippe & Cindy. On Kelbaker Road just north of the road to Granite Cave I saw what was probably a large Bobcat run across the road and into the desert to the east. Philippe and I talked for awhile and then I stored some boxes of my field equipment in the house. When I returned to Dorners Camp Claudia Luke and two of her assistants had arrived and were singing songs (& playing guitar), taking showers, eating cookies, & drinking beer. So I helped them clean out the cookie packages and some bottles. Bob & Bruce returned just after midnight- they had caught two turtles, a Bullfrog, & a catfish in the turtle trap - no snakes at night.

R. MOON 1987 Journal 100 29 May Dorners Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. One day to go. Bob, Bruce, and I stayed at the cabin today to pack our things and clean up. Claudia Luke and her assistants Alexis and Erin are setting up to work on Uta temperature regulation. Bob and I went to see Phillippe (the reserve manager) so he could meet Bob. We talked about our fieldwork and Phillippe showed us the plans for a laboratory on the reserve. Bruce left for Santa Cruz in the late afternoon and Bob and I went to Vulcan Mine to look for rattlesnakes. In the area of Vulcan Mine Bob and I found 2 spiny lizard on two rockpiles, and a night lizard under a rock near a rocky wash (species accounts: Desert Spiny Lizard; Desert Night Lizard). While driving around the old roads there we found a speckled rattlesnake near the base of a small hillside or an old dirt road (species account: Speckled Rattlesnake). R. MOON 1987 Journal 101 29 may Foshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. and out to Essex Road. From there we drove up to Bonanza King Mine and looked around the ghost town of Providence at the mine. There are several pieces of old tin scattered throughout the creosota covered hillside, but we found only woodrats under them. So back to Essex Road and west over Foshay Pass again. On Vulcan Mine Road, where the mountain ridge comes near the road, we found a dead adult leopard lizard that had eaten an adult Uta (Species account: Leopard lizard). We stopped on Vulcan Mine Road to take some more photos of the sunset over the Kelso Dunes, then we drove toward the summit of Kelbeker Road near the Kelso Mountains. On our way up to the summit we found a long- tailed Brush Lizard on the pavement just after sunset (Species account: Long Tailed Brush Lizard). After dark we found a gecko on the pavement south of Kelso on our way back to Dorner's camp for the night (Species account: Banded Gecko).

2. Moon 1987 Journal 102 30 May Dorners Camp, Granite Mountains to Santa Cruz and civilization (what is civilization anyway?) Bob and I cleaned up the last of our things from the cabin this morning. We also cleaned most of the cabin & the windows. Claudia Luke was going to stay another night so she agreed to clean everything that we didn't. I'm going to return for another week in mid June but it's still strange (and sad) to pack up and leave the desert after I had been not only living in the desert but living with it for two months. Thats not such a long time compared to the desert's or my lifespan but then again, a lot of things can happen in two months, and they did. We finally drove out at about 1330 PST and headed for the wet dunes by the sea. It was a long way back to Santa Cruz but the desert will still be there when I return.

Moon 1987 Species Account Glossy Snake (Arizona elegans) 7 April Kelbaker Road 8.8 miles south of Vulcan Mine Road, San Bernardino county, CA. 1913 PST. while night-driving, Bruce and I found a hatchling (probably from Fall of 1986) glossy snake crossing the pavement. Probably 18-20°C, clear skies, half moon. I wonder if this individual is an intergrade between A.e. eburnata and A.e. candida; this individual has 1 preocular on one side (A.e. eburnata according to Stebbins 1985) and 2 preoculars on the other side of its head (A.e. candida according to Stebbins). Variation or an intergrade? Total length 25.2 cm. Catalog # 13

Bruce Wagg and I found two juvenile and one adult glossy snake on the pavement between 1845 and 1930 PST (darkness). Adult snake was dead on the road. Habitat is mostly sandy/loamy with some rocky wash channels and primarily creosote bush cover. Cloud cover ~ 75%, approx 27°C. One small, dried up toad found in a pitfall trap at edge of Desert Almond bush through which some water from the spring flows. Surrounding area steep and rocky w/pinion & juniper trees one west side; flat, cow trampled area to east and south. Spring approx '1/4 mi. southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T9N R14E Sec 6 ne'1/4. elev. ~1500m. Pair of small adult toads in amplexus in puddle of spring in narrow, sandy wash below steep, barren rocky hillsides. About 1400 PST; overcast ~30-50% cloud cover; ~30°c. Toads tried to hide under edge of small rock as I watched. When captured they made no attempt to separate. I found two live and one dead, dried up toads in one pitfall trap just below the Desert almond bush through which a very small stream from the spring flows. The muddy stream dries up just below this pitfall trap. Habitat is narrow, rocky sided canyon and somewhat sandy wash in steep, rocky, barren (burned piñon-juniper woodland) hillsides. 17 may Spring 1/4 mi. southeast of Goldstone spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T9N R14E Sec 6 NE'ly. elev. ~1500 m. Found on more toad trying to burrow in sand in bottom of pitfall trap along small, short stream in sandy wash bottom just below the spring. Habitat is steep sided, barren (burned piñon-juniper woodland) canyon with sandy & somewhat rocky wash at canyon bottom. Some piñon pines, oaks, & shrubs nearby.

Bruce and I found a zebra-tailed lizard on a large, flat surfaced, cement-like rock in the sandy wash. Lizard took cover in a pile of washed out shrub roots when we tried to approach it. 1200 PST. Surrounding desert was mostly barren and sandy with a few scattered creosote bushes and other small shrubs. One individual was yellow with black saddles that form complete rings from midbody down. No spots on yellow between black saddles. Total Length 28.5 cm male catalog #48 Other individual was yellow with dark brown saddles forming complete rings from mid- body down. Bruce and I found a shovel-nosed snake on the pavement at 1945 pst after a thunderstorm. Habitat is sandy with creosote bushes and other sparse shrubs. B.R. Moon 1987 Species Account Sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes) 10 April Kelbaker Road 3.5 miles north of highway 66 (National Trails Highway), San Bernardino county, CA. We found a large adult sidewinder crossing the pavement in early evening in sandy, low shrubby habitat. It rattled and sidewound across the road as we walked up to it after passing it in the car. 1840 PST. 3/4 full moon out at dusk.

MOON 1987 Species Account Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) 10 April Dorner's Camp road (dirt) 1/4 mile from Kelbaker Road near Granite Pass, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. Upon leaving Dorner's camp, Bruce and I accidentally ran over a juvenile rattlesnake as we approached Kelbaker Road on the road to Dorner's camp. 1813 PST, early darkness, 3/4 full moon. This individual was grey and spotted in its coloration. BRM # 19. 20 April Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. TION RLYE sec 31 sw'1/4 We found a large rattlesnake under a desert almond bush just below the dripping pipe that is Goldstone spring. This snake was grey and speckled anteriorly and reddish-pink and faintly banded postere posteriorly. As we approached, it slowly and quietly crawled into the center of the bush (on the ground, not climbing). Rocky area, sparse vegetation in once-burned open piñon-juniper woodland. 1830 PST.

Moon 1987 Species Account Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) 28 April Fork in Bonanza King Mine Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA T11N R14E sec 32 SW/4, elev. 1390 m. I found a large, banded, reddish snake abroad in the daytime shade of the canyon walls. Canyon bottom here is rocky, shrubby with yucca, agave, leafless acacias. As Bruce and I tried to capture this snake, it took cover in bushes (probably Prunus sp.), and even resorted to climbing a foot or two off the ground as we tried to tease it out of the shrub with our noose pole. We finally captured it and Bruce killed it by hitting it on the head with a noose pole. TL 89 cm. to base of first rattle segment. ♀ Unfortunately, Bruce Waggy took this one as a skin, so it isn't a part of our collection.

S.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) 5 May Two canyons west of Blind Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T 10 N R 14 E sec 29 ne'/4 . elev. ~ 1650 m. I nearly walked over a large grey snake that was basking on the reddish rocks of the east side of a spring in the steep, rocky canyon. The snake was approx. 1-1'1/2 m long, greyish with dark speckles, and an approx 10 segment rattle that had broken at the end and did not taper before the break. It was a very heavy snake, probably also quite old. The dense willows of the spring fill the canyon bottom, the catclaws and chollas on the steep, rocky hillsides around the snake. It was shady on the west side of the canyon and sunny on the east side where the snake was. The snake was still when I approached but then hissed, rattled, and took cover in some dense shrubs as I stood and watched. 1645 PST.

B.R. moon 1987 Species Account Mojave Rattlesnake (Crotalus scutulatus) 8 April Kelbaker Road at road to Granite Cove via antenna station, San Bernardino county, CA. T8N R13E Sec 29 nw'1/4. Bruce and I found a small rattlesnake of about 45 cm crossing the paved road under a half full moon. As soon as we approached, it rattled and coiled up as if to strike. We pushed it off the road with a long stick and went on our way. Several meters down the road to the south, we found an adult individual that had been run over (killed) by a car recently. Catalog # 17 10 April Kelbaker Road 2.8 miles north of highway 40, San Bernardino county, CA. We found a large adult snake lying on the warm pavement. It rattled and struck out only after we began to push it across the road & off it with a long stick. R. MOON 1987 Species Account Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus bicinctores) 6 April Cornfield Spring Canyon-south side, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce Wagg and I found a large male lizard on a small rockpile in a gravelly wash channel on the south side of the canyon. Bruce noosed it when it jumped onto the ground behind the rock. Habitat - Gravelly & rocky wash with Creosote, Yucca, & shrubs. Lizard has distinct neck bands with orange and white between them; spotted chin; black blotches under shoulders and groin. S.V. length 9.5 cm. BRM 11. 17 may Ridge southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. I saw one lizard on a gravelly & rocky hillside with some small shrubs and piñon pine trunks at about 1600 m. elevation. Mid morning, ~25° C. Another lizard on a mostly barren, rocky (small rocks) hillside at about 1600 m. elevation. on flat ground this would look like Leopard Lizard habitat, without large rockpiles that Collared lizards seem to prefer. Late afternoon; sunny & breezy.

ad R. Moon 1987 Species Account Desert Iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis) 13 April Sandy wash below east-bound lane on ramp to Interstate 40 at Kelsaker Road, San Bernardino Co., CA. Bruce and I saw several desert iguanas, both juvenile and adults, taking cover in the croosote bushes and other small shrubs in the wash. Approx. 1400 PST, ~100°F, sunny, no breeze. We captured one juvenile lizard by hand; it had green stains on its mouth from eating the plants in the wash. Upon capture, it inflated with air as much as it could and didn't exhale the air until we released it at the site. The other lizards were too wary & fast to capture as they ran from bush to bush when we chased them.

R. MOON 1987 Species Account Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) 22 may Doner's Camp, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino co., CA. Claudia Luke and several other UCB graduate students set up mist nets at night to catch bats. In an hour between checking the nets (~ 2100 PST) we had caught five Big Brown Bats. We took them out of the nets and put them on the ground to fly away when they were ready. Some of them flew away after just a few minutes and some crawled around a little and flew away after about ten minutes. Before the Big Brown Bats were caught, they had caught and released three western Pipistrelles.

I found an adult lizard under a small granite boulder just above a wash and near the intersection of the road to Goldstone Spring and the power line road (both dirt roads). Hilly area strewn with granite boulders in reddish, fine grained soil. Elev. ~1330 m, shrubby habitat with sparse grasses. SVL 7.5 cm total length 16.5cm with 4 cm of regenerated tail. Overall brownish/ greenish, faint orange & pinks under chin. Scar on back below left shoulder. Probably ♀. Catalog # 7 '1/4 km southwest of Goldstone Spring, Providence mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. T9N R14E Sec6 nw'1/4. 1620 PST. Found another adult skink under large rock in a small, moderately steep, rocky ravine. Elev. ~1520 m. Sparse piñon-juniper woodland, also cacti, a few oaks in canyon. Lizard probably burrowed under rock- no apparent holes & smooth packed soil. SVL 8.5 cm total length 18cm with 5.5 cm of regenerated tail. Overall brownish, orange tip of snout, faint orange under chin. Probably ♂. Catalog #8

I found two adult skinks in two pitfall traps below the spring. One ♂ was in a trap at the edge of a Desert Almond bush through which water from the spring flowed. This lizard had a brick red head and overall golden body. The surrounding habitat is steep and rocky on one side, with a few small shrubs, agave plants, and piñon and juniper trees. The other side is a flat, cow trampled plain that marks the fork in the two canyons. The other lizard, a ♀, was in a trap under a Desert Almond approx 20 m below the other trap, in the same general habitat but without any surface moisture nearby. 1702/1 A) was observed on the HPLC while HPLC was running but no visible halo was found. So now please add linker again. Waiting to see if it is going to give a nice H-NMR signal. Also, spin-diffused bromide did not react with benzyl amine as expected but rather gave back the starting material. She was also unable to isolate or identify the whole mixture while using H-NMR to check for any other reaction between them. So now take only halogenated compound and react it with sodium azide in DMF from time to time. See if you get a nice NMR peak with all carbon peaks or exchange with nitrogen and isolated leaving group to be used as starting material. Going back to another in H-exchange giving an anionized and cationic structure mixture while H-NMR is still running a signal and a visible halo were found. I found an adult male skink with a brick red head in a pitfall trap beneath a desert almond bush in a rocky, narrow canyon with dense vegetation (catclaw, cholla, Desert almond + other shrubs). This is just below the lower limit of piñon-juniper woodland in this canyon. It is also just below the spring but far enough from it so there is no surface water near the traps. 21 May Hole in the Wall Campground, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T11N R15E Sec 8 sw'ly. elev. ~1300m. I found an adult ?? lizard, with a brick red head, in the grassy, rocky canyon below the lookout path and the hole in the wall. Only other bush was a desert almond bush.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Leopard Lizard (Gambelia wislizenii) 11 April Approx. 1/2 mi. southwest of Arrowweed Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T9N R13E Sec 27 NW1/4. elev. 1170 m. 1257 PST, Bruce Wagg and I found an adult female lizard along the old dirt road to the spring. Habitat: rocky soil with fairly smooth surface in scrub desert with Yuccas and some creosote. Overcast, ~80% cloud cover, warm (~24°C), windy. 1330 PST, we found another adult female lizard in same area. This one had dried mud under her hind legs & cloaca, possibly from egg laying; she was also emaciated. Bob Macey and I found a dead adult lizard that had eaten an adult Uta stansburiana on the pavement in the late afternoon; lizard had been run over by a car. B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) 10 April Donner's camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. T8N R13E Sec4 sw'4. 1615 PST. I found a tortoise in the shade of some desert almond bushes in the sandy wash next to the square cement tank at the cabin. The tortoise was at the base of a grass covered hill that goes up to the driveway along the cabin. Upon being disturbed, it pulled itself into its shell and sat there still for about 15 minutes. After about 1/2 hour it had moved about 1/2 m up the grassy hill and sat still again. After another half hour it was gone. f ~27 cm carapace. It had green stains on its beak probably from recently eating the low, green grasses in the area.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) April Vulcan Mine Road approximately 5 miles from Kelbaker Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. I found an adult tortoise active on the north side of Vulcan Mine Road late in the afternoon. Habitat was partly rocky, Creosote bush & Yucca vegetation on gently sloping bajada near the mountain ridge that extends furthest toward Kelbaker Road along Vulcan Mine Road. There was a burrow about 3 meters from the tortoise that looked about the right size for the tortoise to live in; the tortoise was headed in the direction of the burrow.

Moon 1987 Species Account Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) 25 April Powerline road (dirt) between Kelbaker Road and Foshay Pass, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino county, CA. elev. ~ 1000 m. 0830 PST. We found two tortoises less Km about 1/4 mile apart, both walking down the dirt road about 1/2 mile east of Kelbaker Road. The terrain was hilly, traversed by several washes and hills that formed the bajada to the mountain base. One ?, one ?, both w/ about 28 cm carapaces. The creosote bushes are flowering in the area as are some small annuals. One individual released some water when I picked it up to move it from the road so we could drive past it.

The habitat was flat, creosote-Yucca-scrub desert with sandy and rocky washes cutting through the plains. Overcast locally with a thunderstorm to the north but local rainfall. B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Common Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getulus) 14 May Vulcan Mine Road 1.9 mi. east of Kelbaker Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T10N R13E sec 17 se'1/4. elev. ~ 780 m. Bruce and found a Kingsnake crossing the pavement at 2040 PST. Habitat is Creosote- scrub with few Yuccas on rocky soil with many rocky washes nearby. B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Blind Snake (Leptotyphlops humilis) 1 May Amargosa River near Tecopa, Inyo co., CA. Kellar Autumn, along with Bob Macey, Bruce Wagg, and I collected two blind snakes under some small rocks in soft, moist soil where there were termite and ant nests. This was in a grove of trees (probably cottonwoods) near the bank of the Amargosa River. Specimens catalogued by Robert (Bob) Macey and Kellar Autumn.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Rosy Boa (Lichanura trivirgata) 8 April Bonanza King Mine, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino County, CA. TION R14E Sec 3 nw'1/4. I found an adult rosy boa under a rock on a barren slope of old mine tailings. 1600 PST, ~20°C, overcast 50-75% cloud cover, Elev. ~1340 m. Talus slope where I found snake is south of top of the hill to the south of the main mine tunnel. Total length approx 76 cm (it wouldn't relax to be measured accurately). Several small scars on back along entire length, probably from activity or burrowing in rocky areas. Greyish ground color with 3 orange stripes with mostly smooth edges. ♀. Catalog #16 14 April Bonanza King Mine Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino County, CA. T11N R14E Sec 32 sw'1/4 Elev. 1400m. I found an adult ♀ boa stretched out across a rocky wash at the canyon fork at 1755 PST, just after sunset*. Rocky, brushy canyon, just below pines-juniper woodland. Snake did not move or try to escape when I approached; it was easy to catch even with a heavy, full backpack on my back. Catalog #27. Kept alive by Bruce Wagg.

S.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Bobcat (Lynx rufus) 16 May - Quail Spring Basin road approx 1 mi. southeast of Arrowweed spring road, Providence Mountains, San Bernadino co., CA. Approx 1400 PST, Bruce and I saw a Bobcat run out of the Creosote - scrub desert on the south side of the road, across the dirt road, and up onto the granite boulder hillside. It hid behind a large boulder for a minute or so and then went up into the rocks further. When the Bobcat hid behind the first boulder a large Chuckwella car over the boulder from behind and down the face into a crevice. The cat was a golden Brownish color with some spots and a dark tipped tail with light underside (body -> tail).

Moon 1987 Species Account Coachwhip (Masticophis flagellum) 25 April Powerline Road 1-3 miles cast of Kelbaker Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. 0920 PST, ~30°C, Bruce and I found a large coachwhip on the dirt, powerline road. Bruce caught it. Habitat is hilly (slightly) with some boulder outcrops, creosote bush, yucca, and other bajada shrubs on loose ground. elev. ~1000 m. Total length 149 cm. Reddish with black neck region and fairly distinct crossbands (reddish) along entire length of body; pink below along entire length. Catalog # BRM #53.

3. R MOON 1987 Species Account Striped Whipsnake (Masticophis taeniatus) 14 May South fork of Bonanza King Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. T11N R14E Sec 31 SE'/4. elev. 1520 m. I saw a small (~1m) whipsnake in a rocky, brushy part of the canyon at about 1600 PST. It took cover in a small dead shrub overgrown with grass but then quickly crawled into a large clump of Desert Almond. This area was about '1/4 south of the confluence of the South Fork with the middle fork of the canyon, and just above a small steep slope (almost a cliff) of soil and rock jumbles. The habitat is Pinar-Juniper, just above lower limit in this canyon, with oak like bushes and Desert Almonds in addition to smaller shrubs and grasses. The snake was in sunlight but otherwise it was mostly overcast (~75% cloud cover); 25-27°C.

S.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Striped Whipsnake (Masticophis taeniatus) 20 May Two canyons west of Blind Spring, Providence mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. TION R14E Sec 29 ne'/4. elev. 1500m. 1115 PST, I saw a large snake taking cover in a rockpile in a rocky wash grown to dense stands of catclaw, cholla, prickly pear, Yucca, and various shrubs and grasses. This is well below the piñon-juniper woodland in this canyon. warm, sunny, & breezy day.

R. MOON 1987 Species Account Gray Shrew (Notiosorex crawfordi) 14 May South [illegible] fork in Bonanza king Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. T11N R14E sec 32 sw'1/4. elev. ~1460 m. Bruce and I found a dead [illegible] shrew in one of our pitfall traps just above the confluence of the south fork and middle fork of Bonanza king Canyon. The trap was placed just below some small boulders in a rocky wash next to some oak like shrubs and a piñon pine. This area is the approximate lower limit of the Piñon-Juniper woodland in this canyon. My identification of this specimen is tentative as this species is the only known one in the area and specimens have been taken from the nearby Granite Mountains. I know of no other shrew specimens taken from the Providence Mountains.

Species Account Desert Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma platyrhinos) 17 May Vulcan Mine Road approx. 3 mi. southeast of Kelbaker Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernadino co., CA. I saw a horned lizard on the pavement at about 1520 PST, ~32°C. It ran off the road as I drove past. Habitat - sandy & gravelly washes near road with some rocky areas nearby; Creosote bush & small shrub vegetation.

Brad R. Moon 1987 Species Account Leaf-nosed snake (Phyllorhyncus decurtatus) 24 April Hwy 66 (National Trails Highway) 13 miles east of Cadiz Road, San Bernardino co., CA. .R. MOON 1987 Species Account Western Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus hesperus) 22 May Dornes Camp, Granite Mountains (near Kelso), San Bernardino co., CA. Claudia Luke and several of her graduate student colleagues caught three pipistrelles just after dark in a mist net near the square cement water tank on the north side of the cabin. The bats squeaked as they were untangled from the nets & placed on the ground to fly away.

Species Account Gopher Snake (Pituophis melandevus) 2 may northeast edge of Wild Horse Mesa, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T11N R14E Sec 11 nw'1/4. elev. 1490 m. Bob Macey, Kellar Autumn, Bruce Wagg, and I drove up Wild Horse Canyon and took a side road that goes up into the canyon at the northeast side of Wild Horse Mesa. Past an old water tank in the dense piñon- juniper woodland Kellar spotted a large gopher snake basking beneath two piñon pines. The snake made no attempt to escape or bite when captured. Catalogue # 65. 14 may Blair Bro's Ranch road 3.2 mi. north of Essex Road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T10N R15E Sec 18 nw'1/4. elev. ~ 1050 m. Bruce Wagg and I found a large snake basking on the dirt road in the late afternoon. Partly sunny, mostly overcast (~75% cloud cover), warm ~27°C. R. MOON 1987 Species Account Gopher Snake (Pituophis melanoleucus) 17 May Peak south of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. T9N R14E Sec 6 ne'¼. elev. 1704 m. I found a large Gopher Snake on the rocks at the peak in the late morning. The snake (~1½ m long) took cover under some rocks, hissing at me as I approached. Habitat was a mostly barren (except for small shrubs & grasses) ridge with rocky peaks and fallen, burned piñon pines and junipers on loamy soil. Sunny, ~25°C, and breezy. Specimen not collected.

R. MOON 1987 Species Account Long-Nosed Snake (Rhinocheilus lecontei) 25 April Kelbaker Road 4.5 mi. south of Kelso, San Bernadino co., CA. T 10N R 13E sec 17 nw'ly, elev. ~725 m. 2025 PST, Bruce, my parents, and I found a small snake on the edge of the pavement about 1 hour after a thunder shower. Surrounding habitat is Creosote-scrub desert on sandy and rocky soil with several rocky washes nearby. This snake is white with red flecks between wider black saddles. The black saddles have white spots on the sides. Underneath each white band there is a black rectangle on the ventral scales where they meet the dorsal scales. The black saddles are two to three times as wide as the white bands. Belly white. Catalogue #: 56.

S.R. Moon 1987 Species Account Long-Nosed Snake (Rhinocheilus lecontei) 14 may Kelbaker Road 1.1 mi. north of Hwy 40, San Bernardino co., CA. T8N R12E sec 36 se 1/4 elev ~ 1000m. Bruce and I found an adult snake crossing the dirt part of Kelbaker Road at 2000 PST. Surrounding habitat is sandy/loamy soil in Creosote-Scrub desert with some large Granite boulder outcroppings nearby. This snake has black saddles 1 1/2 to 2 times as wide as red interspaces. The black saddles narrow on lower sides and stop above ventral scales. There is little white between black saddles; mostly red bands that widen on lower sides and are split part way up the side by black squares. The black saddles and squares have white spots on sides; the red, which also stops above ventral scales has some black flecks. Belly whitish with very few black flecks. This is the second night of the full moon but it hadn't risen yet and the sky was about 80% cloudy. Thunderstorms nearby but no rain here. Catalogue # 81.

T10N R13E Sec 21 center . elev. ~ 850m. Adult snake found on pavement at 2000 PST. Habitat: Creosote scrub with few Yuccas on mostly rocky soil. Many rocky washes nearby. Full moon but not risen yet; nearly 80% cloudy; rained on and off during daytime until afternoon. This snake has black saddles 2 times as wide as white interspaces; black saddles have white spots on sides. White interspaces have red flecks on sides. Some of the black saddles are connected accross midline of back forming white & red crossbars on sides. Some white spots on black continous accross midline of back. Some small black rectangles on ventral scales where they meet dorsal scales; belly white. Catalog #88

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Long-Nosed Snake (Rhinacheilus lecontei) 18 May Essex Road 2.4 mi. northwest of Hwy 40, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce & I found an adult snake on the pavement here at about 1930 PST. The night is cool & breezy. Habitat - Creosote- scrub on loamy soil. BRM 97. 25 May Cottonwood Cove area, east of Searchlight, Clark co., Nev. Bob Macey, Bruce Wagg, and I found a long-nosed snake that corresponds to the old description of R.I. clarus on the pavement about 1 hr. after dark (~ 2000 PST). This snake has wide black saddles with white spots on lower sides and narrow white interspaces with very little, faint red flecks on the white. Habitat - Sparse Creosote-scrub in large sandy and gravelly washes. Specimen catalogued by Bob Macey.

3.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Chuckwalla (Sauromalus obesus) 15 May Mine south of windy Point, Bristol Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I saw several chuckwalls on the dark rocks along the base of the Bristol Mountains (I saw one ; Bruce saw 5). The lizard I saw was wedged in between two large rocks below the mine shaft. For the small area we covered, The chuckwalls seem very abundant locally. It was mostly overcast with high clouds ; about 1550 PST ; warm, ~30°C when we found the lizards. 16 May Granite boulders at mouth of Quail Spring Basin approx 1 mi. south east of Arrowweed Springs road, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. I saw a large Chuckwalla run over a large granite boulder and down its south face into a crevice. The lizard was scared out from behind the boulder covered hillside north of the dirt road into the basin by a Bobcat that car to and hid behind the boulder. Sunny with a few high clouds & occasional wind ; ~27°C; approx. 1430 PST. Creosote-scrub, loamy soil at edge of bouldery hillside.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Chuckwalla (Sauromalus obesus) 21 May Hole in the Wall campground, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T 11N R 15E Sec 8 sw'1/4. elev. ~1300m. Adult lizard seen on rock near picnic table in campground. It ran across the ground + up into a crevice in the volcanic rock. Habitat is desert scrub, including some junipers and great Basin sagebrush, but no creosote. Sunny day, breezy, mild. This chuckwalla had a reddish torso, black at both ends, and greyish tail. 21 May Wild Horse Canyon, west side of Hole in the Wall, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T 11N R 15E Sec 7 se'1/4. elev. 1300 m. Harry Greene caught a juvenile chuckwalla near the base of the butte on the west side of Hole in the Wall (in Wild Horse Canyon). The lizard was on brownish volcanic rock; desert scrub vegetation (Yuccas, cholla, & other small shrubs) Specimen collected by Harry Greene.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister) 5 April Dorness Camp, Granite Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T18N R13E sec 4 sw¼. elev. ~1250m. 0830 PST, Bruce and I found a juvenile lizard in a small woodpile at the corner of the cabin above the basement. Had distinct neck bands, overall yellowish on back. Habitat - Yucca, cholla scrub near base of bouldery mountainside. ♀ 6 April Cornfield Spring Canyon, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T10N R13E sec 11 nw¼. elev. 930m. Juvenile female found on large rockpile on the south side of the wash that flows along the southernmost side of the canyon. I noosed the lizard after a few tries. Habitat - gravelly wash channel w/ rockpiles and some creosote, yucca, and other shrubs. S.V. length: 5.2 cm. Had distinct neck band. BRM 12.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Spring Lizard (Sceloporus magister) 8 April Bonanza King Mine, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. TION RHE Sec 3 nw'4. elev.~1340 m. 1430 PST, Two very large adult lizards found on large rocks just below main mine tunnel. Overcast, 50-75% cloud cover; ~25°C. Both lizards took cover as soon as we saw them, from about 7m. away. 12 April Summit Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. elev. 1400 m. TION RHE Sec 16 nw'4. Bruce and I found an adult female lizard under some wood beams at tunnel entrance. Cold, windy day; lizard was inactive when captured. Pitor-juniper wood- land with some rocky areas & small canyons. B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister) 4 May Kelbaker Road at boulder outcrops 2-2 mi. north of Hwy 40. San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I stopped at the boulders on both sides of Kelbaker Road at about 0930 PST to look for spiny lizards. We noosed six lizards from crevices in the boulders where they lived. One adult \u2642, one adult \u2640; two juvenile \u2642's, two \u2640's. Specimens catalogued by Bruce Wagg. 6 May Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. 3.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister) 16 May Quail Spring Basin, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I captured three adult lizards on on boulder piles just south of the granite hillside near the west end of the basin. Habitat - Creosote - scrub - grass with numerous boulder outcrops; near granit boulder covered mountainside. Catalogued by Bruce Waggy. 25 May Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T10N R14E Sec31 sw'1/4. elev. 1420 m. I found one adult female lizard in a pitfall trap just below a Desert Almond bush below the spring. Habitat - moist area with some surface water in rocky ravine in generally barren (burned) rocky piñon-junipers covered mountainside. B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) 6 May Spring approx '4 mi. southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T9N R14E Sec 6 ne 1/4 . elev. ~ 1500m. One adult ♂ caught in a pitfall trap in a narrow sandy wash along a small short distance of running water. The wash also has some large rockpiles, fallen and standing dead (burned) piñon trees. The steep hillsides above the wash are rocky and mostly barren with few shrubs and burned piñon trunks. This lizard was light brownish-grey on the back with small blue spots and has a dark blue throat patch and belly patches; has yellow on rear edge of all limbs but more pronounced on hind legs behind femoral pores. Catalog # 74 17 may mountain ridges south & southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T9N R14E Sec's 6 and 5 . elev. 1700-1800m. I saw several lizards on rock piles on the ridgetops in the dead (burned) piñon-juniper woodland; now mostly barren except for some shrubs & grasses. Lizards were all dark colored on the boulders. B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) 21 May Hole in the wall Campground, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. elev. ~1300m. I saw one lizard in the small, round canyon below the lookout path at the hole in the wall. The canyon bottom is flat with grass and a Desert Almond Bush and steep, nearly vertical, volcanic rock walls. It is sunny and usually very warm there due to the surrounding walls.

Brad R. Moon 1987 Species Account Lyre Snake (Trimorphodon biscutatus) 24 April Kelbaker Road 8.4 miles south of Hwy 40, at Windy Point - Bristol Mountains, San Bernardino co, CA. T6N R13E sec 18 nw 1/4. elev. ~ 450 m. 2046 PST Bruce and I found a juvenile snake on the pavement near where the Bristol Mountains extend out to the road. Surrounding desert is sandy, with creosote bushes and other small, sparse shrubs. Air temp. 27° C by my thermometer. Snake is T. b. vandenburghi with a single anal scale and 39 dorsal blotches. B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Barn Owl (Tyto alba) 21 may Hole in the Wall campground, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. TILN RISE Sec 8 SW'ly. elev. 1310 m. I found three owls roosting together in a small cave like hole in the side of a cliff in the canyon below the lookout point. there were many owl pellets below these volcanic cliffs with their cave like holes, some pellets fresh, some old > dried. The owls were about 15 m above the canyon bottom.

B.R. Moon 1987 Species Account Mojave Fringe Toed Lizard (Uma scoparia) 22 May South side of Kelso Dunes (Devils Playground), San Bernadino co., CA. Claudia Luke, several other UCB graduate students, some of their guests, and I hiked around the lower dunes and saw several sand lizards, mostly juveniles and a few adults. Most of them were near small shrubs or bunch grasses, usually with rodent holes nearby. We caught a few small lizards to photograph and released them on location. As we went higher on the dunes we saw fewer of them, and by early afternoon most of the lizards had taken cover from the sun & heat.

Dead adult ♂ lizard found on pavement at night. Habitat is creosote with some gresses on mostly sandy soil. Lizard has blue patches on the sides of its belly; faint orange marks on back. S.V. length: 5.3 cm ; total length: 18.4 cm, BRM 84. 29 May Kelbaker Road approx. 2 mi. north of kelso, San Bernardino co., CA. Bob Macey and I found a lizard on the pavement just after sunset but before it was completely dark. Habitat was Creosote-Scrub desert on partly loamy and partly rocky soil. Specimen was collected and catalogued by Robert (Bob) Macey.

R. MOON 1987 Species Account Side Blotched Lizard (Uta stansburiana) 20 April Vicinity of Volcan Mine, Providence mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce Wagg and I caught three lizards near Volcan mine, two in a rocky & gravelly wash and one in low shrubland on loamy soil. Both were caught in the afternoon around 1530 PST. Since April we have seen this species in nearly every habitat, on the ground, rocks, boards, fallen trees, etc., at every elevation throughout the Providence Mountains area. The lizards seem to be more abundant where there are surface objects such as rocks and logs than on open ground or sand with sparse shrubs or bushes. BRM 31, 32, 37.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Side Blotched Lizard (Uta stansburiana) 17 May Mountain peaks & ridge southeast of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. I caught one lizard and saw several others in the mountainous area southeast of Goldstone Spring. They more common on the ground near shrubs and on smaller logs or rockpiles than on the larger dead piñon and juniper trees (burned) and rocky peaks. It seems that on these larger (and higher off the ground) objects the fence lizards, Sceloporus occidentalis, dominate the space. This is probably one way in which these two similar species coexist in this area. Both of these species range up to the highest peaks (1704m) in this area. The habitat here is dead (burned) piñon-juniper woodland on hilly, rocky canyon sides and on the flatter ridges with more low shrubs on loamy soil with large rock outcrops. BRM 93.

R. MOON 1987 Species Account Kit Fox (Vulpes macrotis) 3 may Kelbaker Road 4 mi. north of Hwy 40, San Bernadino co, CA. Brian Norton, Bruce Waggs and I saw a kit fox sitting on the road just after sunset; it move to the side of the road for a second before running off into the desert as we drove closer. This fox probably lives in the hole along the dirt road at the relay station nearby since we have glimpsed a fox in this area before. Habitat is creosote scrub on sandy/loamy soil.

B.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Night Lizard (Xantusia vigilis) 8 April Bonanza King Canyon mouth, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T10 N R14 E Sec 3 nw 1/4. elev. ~1320 m. Bruce Wagg and I found several night lizards under different pieces of old corrugated tin lying on the ground around the old fallen stone houses south of and above the mine tunnels. Underneath most of the pieces of tin were old woodrat nests consisting of cholla spines, creosote twigs, some fur, etc. All of the lizards took cover in the old nests and twigs. We collected two individuals. Habitat was Creosote-grass-cholla alluvial fan below mouth of canyon. Bruce and I found three lizards in one pitfall trap between to Yucca trees in the mouth of the canyon. S.R. MOON 1987 Species Account Desert Night Lizard (Xantusia vigilis) 20 May Two canyons west of Blind Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T10N R14E Sec 29 ne'1/4. elev. ~ 1600 m. One lizard caught in a pitfall trap in a narrow, rocky canyon with dense growth of catchew, cholla, mormontea, desert almond, and other shrubs. This is just below the lower limit of piñon-juniper woodland in this canyon. The trap was in the canyon just below the cliffs where the spring begins but the surface moisture does not come down this far from the spring. 29 May Vulcar mine area, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA. T10N R13E Sec 25 sw'1/4. elev. ~ 1200 m. I found one night lizard under a rock below a large boulder that had a wood- cat nest under it and partly under the trza rock where the lizard was. Habitat - rocky hillside along a rocky wash channel grown to Yucca, catchlaw, Desert Almond, & various other shrubs. Catalog #106

Abridged, again (silently) [illegible] The first of the three years I was in high school, we had to do a project on a topic of our choice. We were given a list of topics and told to pick one. I chose "the history of the computer." It seemed like an interesting topic at the time. I started researching it online and found out that there are many different types of computers. There was the mainframe, minicomputer, microcomputer, etcetera. Then came along something called a personal computer or PC for short. At first I didn't understand why people would want to buy these things. They were so expensive compared to what they could get from other sources. But then I realized that maybe some people just wanted their own little machine they could use whenever they wanted without having to go somewhere else every time. So I decided to try making my own PC using parts I already owned or bought cheaply at stores around town. This turned out pretty well actually considering how much trouble it caused me over the next few months trying to figure everything out properly before finally getting it working correctly enough so as not break down again within days after finishing putting together all those pieces into one big unit called THE COMPUTER SYSTEM WHICH NOW EXISTS STILL TODAY AS ONE OF MANY THINGS PEOPLE USE EVERY DAY WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING HOW COMPLEX IT ALL REALLY IS UNTIL THEY START TRYING TO FIX SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE. Then came along another thing entirely which changed everything forever... the internet! Before this point nobody really knew what it was except perhaps those who worked at universities doing research projects related to networking technologies back then. But now everyone could connect with anyone else anywhere in the world instantly via email messages sent through cables running under oceans connecting continents together into one giant network called THE INTERNET WHICH HAS REVOLUTIONIZED EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS TODAY AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO FOR YEARS COMING UP.
