26 April Mitchell Caverns, Providence Mountains,
San Bernardino Co., CA.
I took my parents to see Mitchell
Caverns while they're here visiting for
a couple of days. We were all amazed
at the beautiful geologic features of the
caverns, and I was particularly interested
in hearing about the Pleistocene sloth fossils
found there.
Afterwards I talked to the ranger,
John Kelso-Shelton, about the ringneck snake
sightings in the area. He said they had been
seen in the rocky area on the trail from the
park headquarters to the Caverns in the fall.
The elevation there is about 1300 m and there
does not seem to be much surface moisture
there. All in all not the type of habitat
I would expect to find ringneck snakes in.
Mr. Kelso-Shelton said that this spring people
visiting the park had seen Rosy Boas, king-
snakes, and even a Lyre snake on the trails
near the office but none of those snakes had
been captured for closer examination. I would
expect Lyre snakes here but the accuracy of
this identification is questionable since I don't know
