Quail Spring Basin, Providence Mountains,
San Bernardino co., CA.
We drove to where the road enters
the sandy wash south of Quail Spring.
From there I hiked over the low,
Creosote-Yucca hills toward the spring.
Bruce looked all around the rocky
hillside south of the road for lizards.
At the spring I found a dry metal
trough with some rabbit bones in it.
Just passed this there was a dead
bull in the narrow, sandy wash. There
was a depression in the wash with
water in it and a lot of bees around
it. Further up the canyon, about 1/8 mi. or less,
I found a small cave with some
water in it and a wooden frame at the
entrance like in a mine shaft.
After looking around for a little while
I headed back to the car to head home.
It was still sunny with a few high clouds
and an occasional breeze, as it had been
all afternoon, when we left.
on our way down Kelbaker Road we found
an adult Gopher snake on the pavement (species accounts
Gopher Snake). Then home to play darts & rest.
