Species Account
Mojave Fringe Toed Lizard
(Uma scoparia)
22 May
South side of Kelso Dunes (Devils Playground),
San Bernadino co., CA.
Claudia Luke, several other UCB graduate
students, some of their guests, and I hiked
around the lower dunes and saw several sand
lizards, mostly juveniles and a few adults.
Most of them were near small shrubs or
bunch grasses, usually with rodent holes nearby.
We caught a few small lizards to photograph
and released them on location. As we went
higher on the dunes we saw fewer of them,
and by early afternoon most of the lizards
had taken cover from the sun & heat.
