Brad R. moon 1987 Species Account Shovel-nosed snake (Chionactis occipitalis) 24 April Cadiz Road 3.4 miles south of Hwy 66 (National Trails Highway), San Bernardino co., CA. 1820 PST Bruce Wagg and I found two snakes on the pavement within about 10m of each other. Surrounding desert was mostly barren and sandy with a few scattered creosote bushes and other small shrubs. One individual was yellow with black saddles that form complete rings from midbody down. No spots on yellow between black saddles. Total Length 28.5 cm male catalog #48 Other individual was yellow with dark brown saddles forming complete rings from mid- body down. This individual has some faint red spots on yellow sides between dark saddles. Total Length 31.5 cm female catalog #49.
