Species Account
Speckled Rattlesnake
(Crotalus mitchellii)
28 April Fork in Bonanza King Mine Canyon, Providence
Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA T11N R14E sec 32
SW/4, elev. 1390 m.
I found a large, banded, reddish snake
abroad in the daytime shade of the canyon walls.
Canyon bottom here is rocky, shrubby with yucca,
agave, leafless acacias. As Bruce and I tried
to capture this snake, it took cover in bushes
(probably Prunus sp.), and even resorted to climbing
a foot or two off the ground as we tried to
tease it out of the shrub with our noose pole.
We finally captured it and Bruce killed it by
hitting it on the head with a noose pole.
TL 89 cm. to base of first rattle segment. ♀
Unfortunately, Bruce Waggy took this one as
a skin, so it isn't a part of our collection.
