R. MOON 1987 Species Account Gopher Snake (Pituophis melanoleucus) 17 May Peak south of Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains, San Bernardino Co., CA. T9N R14E Sec 6 ne'¼. elev. 1704 m. I found a large Gopher Snake on the rocks at the peak in the late morning. The snake (~1½ m long) took cover under some rocks, hissing at me as I approached. Habitat was a mostly barren (except for small shrubs & grasses) ridge with rocky peaks and fallen, burned piñon pines and junipers on loamy soil. Sunny, ~25°C, and breezy. Specimen not collected.
